Title: Which is better? Japanese or English?
Post by: glass_rain on December 30 2005, 10:51 am
I've only seen the English version, so of course, all the name were different, which was really annoying. So I wanted to know which one you guys thought was better, English or Japanese?

Definitely the Japanese version. I hated the English versions soooo much that I am currently selling my English version DVD's and VHS' (don't know why I brought them in the first place)

The reason why I don't like the English version is because....
~ The voices for almost all the characters sounds so wrong, for example Kero's voice sounds as though he is an old man!
~ The way they cut and editted so many parts!
~ Music is not as good as the Japanese version. I suppose the music is okay in the English version, but they only composed a few pieces of music and play the same old music again and again in every episode.
~ Songs are not particulary good. I suppose some of the songs such as Razzamatazz (spelling?), Just around the corner are okay, but notice most of the songs are fairly short and looks totally wrong going with CCS such as I can make it
~ There is no relationships/couples in the dub. What happened to the S & S couple?
~ Character names has changed, the Japanese names definitely suit the characters more.

There are more reasons why I hate the English version, but I think I will leave it there because I'm tired typing now ><"

Cardcaptor Sakura (Japanese) > Crapcaptors (English)

I won't even dignify the poll with a response :tongue:

Definitely the Japanese is better. I cannot stand how they dubbed the English version. They cut it, sliced it, and diced it until it was mince meat! As for downloads, I have all the Japanese episodes on DVD so I don't need to download them, but for you the only way you can ever see them is if you have bittorent.

Trust me, you won't find direct download. I looked way before I got my episodes, and I only ever found 1 website with direct link, and they're closed down.

Japanese.. coz in Japanese, you can really feel the tension of the anime... The emotions fit in the way they dub it.... so, definitely japanese!

There's no doubt about it.  The Japanese version definetly gets my vote.  For one thing, it's the original version that was meant to be seen.  The dub VAs are terrible and don't fit the characters at all; a lot of episodes were skipped and combined, and some were even aired out of order in the U.S. (only 39 out of the original 70 were ever aired on Kid's WB); almost every character's personality was changed, usually to make them more snobbier than what they were in the original; changes to the plot were made, such as cutting out all the relationships , including the more "innocent" ones like Sakura x Shaoran among other changes, and the ending was just really screwed up.  By itself CC isn't half-bad, admittedly.  Nelvana did do a pretty good job of covering up the cuts they made, so you could almost consider CC to be a seperate series from CCS, and CC did introduce many CCS fans to the original and Clamp in general, myself included, but CCS is still better hands-down.

And for that reason, I have to say both versions.

People are really harsh towards the dubbed. >< It bugs me when people make fun of it. I have to say that the subbed sounds more mature. I'm 19 years old, so I like the subbed better.
Title: Re: Which is better? Japanese or English?
Post by: Moon on January 18 2006, 07:23 am
Sakura is.. what, 10 years old! Tomoyo generally sounds more mature for her age, but for Sakura, she's suppose to be sweet! Most the main characters are children!! I love the japanese verison better, because Sakura sounds so much sweeter then her english counterpart. It makes me clinge.

Although from watching the subbed verison I was able to find out about the original verison. I noticed that they left out so much and I curious as to why. The episode guide is so short compared to how long Card Captor Sakura is. But all I can is, to each their own. If you liked the subbed so much, then thats fine. However most of the members on this forum prefer the japanese more, like myself.

That's understandable...however they couldn't leave CCS alone and ending up butchering it in an attempt to appeal to the merchendising-hungry Americans...and failed miserably at it.

well i think it's kinda obvious the japanese version wins hands

[fyi for you guys who haven't seen any episodes in japanese, you can watch them for free on [www.youtube.com] just type in cardcaptors or CCS or syaoran even and you can find them; no dling needed; mind you not all episodes are posted yet]

I will say this though:

Kero's ghetto voice; i think it worked. Even though i love his high squeaky voice in all its glory [and it made more sense since he was so tiny]

yueh: it wasn't bad! still had that cold/sugoi tone to it

touya: not bad either; but i'm sure it wasn't hard to find some tall guy with a deep voice for his part

terada sensei: I think his american voice is better actually ::runs and hides under covers:: don't hurt me!!! T_T but seriously!! he's not buff enough to have such a guff voice! his shoulders need to be at least twice their size for him to sound like that.

all and all GO JAPANESE! ^^V

^ Yeah. That's what I noticed too! It seems like CC is aimed more towards both boys and girls and it made it seem like just another kiddie show. CCS is a more girlie show it and just has so much more depth. Unlike CC who is just lacking total depth and doesn't even make sense. I remember watching the first episode Cartoonnetwork aired and I was like. o_0 "I didn't understand any of that." It was just awful that they didn't even show the first episode!

Yeah that was always weird. Wasn't it like a new card they were going to reveal. Sometimes they would show Sakura capturing the card in that after the episode. It was a card that she had used in the episode. Sometimes it was just weird and it wasn't even a card she had used in that episode. :/

They didn't show the episode where Sa-KOO-Ra became a Cardcaptor until AFTER she beat Yu-A in Final Judgment. As far as Clow (rhymes with 'COW') Reed, they never did explain him in the Englsh version. Ah...the joys of a town called Reedington.

Sorry...couldn't resist writing all that down :D

Seroiusly, dubs you can never get anything good from a dub. Even if it wasn't dub by Nelvana, CCS dubbed still sucks. In Animax anyway. (An anime channel in our country.) But what's good is that they don't butcher it, yet, cheers, I'll stick to my Japanese DVD's if you don't mind.

I absolutely hated the dialog changes! I will NEVER EVER get over Toya, oops sorry, Tori and Julian (which I affectionately dub as the-name-barbie-would-give-to-her-horse :D) talking about NEWTON!

EDIT: LOLZ, I wondered where this thread went. There was a 25 page thread against Nelvana's CC. Clickie desu (http://www.capturedwings.net/forums/index.php?topic=66.0).

Yes, you're right. I remember. I suppose I should've been clearer. I meant that they didn't explain who Clow Reed was at the beginning of the series. My mistake. Thank you for pointing that out.

One of the best things in CCS for me are the little lovey-dovey moments all the time (so cute!) Nelvana got rid of so many of those moments! Yeah sure they kept in many of the s+s moments, but what about Touya and Yukito? Theyre a very cute couple and I think Nelvana edited all of that out, plus Tomoyo's admirations of Sakura. *cry* Those people massacred the series.

Plus, the voices don't suit.
*EDIT: I almost forgot, the music in the english version is kinda, slightly....cringeworthy.

Of course I liked the Japanese version better. The characters developed more through each episode and there was actually a plot and character background. The music aint that good in the English version either, esspecially the theme song. The guy who sang it certainly didn't know proper english...they also removed alot of relationships away in Cardcaptors. One of the best things in Cardcaptor Sakura was the relationships, mainly the Syaoran x Sakura and Yukito x Sakura/Syaoran, which were thrown away in the English version.  :cry:

And the characters are more sweeter than the snobby characters in the cropped up and trashed Cardcaptors. :D I much prefer Sakura from CCS over the snobby, selfish and u stressed Sakura from the butchered CC dub, thank you.  :)

No, it was Yoru no Uta they dubbed in tagalog. It was cute though.

Kapag ako ay nalulumbay~
Hinahanap ang kalinga ni inay~
Ilang ulit inaasam~
Ang mainit na yakap ng nanay ko~

They kept the meaning of the song intact.

Personally I think the English version is OK, but only the Australian english version. We had all 70 episodes dubbed so it's a lot better than the American version although the voices are still the same as the American version. All the episodes were dubbed so I wonder why they didn't show them all in America?

I may change my mind though as I've ordered the Japanese version and can't wait to watch it.

Because they didn't do a straight dub from Japanese to English...they changed the very meaning of the episodes themselves to the point of the show becoming an embarrasement.

I don't think any dub could be called a straight dub but the aussie version was about as straight as it's gonna get. As far as I can tell nothing was cut but some dialogue was changed. I'll be able to make a better comparison when I see more of the Japanese version.

Because Kid's WB wanted the show to focus more on the action aspects of CCS in order to make another Pokemon clone.  Kid's WB skipped the first seven episodes because they weren't action-packed enough and they were also centered around Sakura, but Kid's WB wanted the show to be more about Li.  So, all the other episodes that didn't have a lot of action scenes in them or were about Sakura were either skipped or combined.

The 'Pokemon Clone' reference made was their attempt to make Cardcaptors the 'NEXT BIG TOY CRAZE!' like the Pokemon cards and toys. Alas, it fell flat on its face and all fingers point toward Nelvana and Kids WB for attempting to market it the way they did.

I hate it when they do LOADS and loads of merchandise, like they did with Harry Potter and other things...There's just so much hype then and it gets so annoying! When they reel out tons of stuff, it ends up looking cheap as well *cringe* It would be so bad if they turned Cardcaptors into that-coz that would just cheapen Cardcaptor Sakura for us as well

In Australia we got an uncut dub of CCS. It had the same voices as the US one and the same name changes, but it had no footage cut (except for a few seconds to fit in commercials or something) and we also got an English version of Catch You Catch Me as well as It's Groovy (I think thyat's the song's name) and Kero's end of episode thing. The Eps were also in order.

I love the Jap version but I liked the English one we got too. I also liked some of the English songs like Just Around the Corner and Tell Me. I think I like both equally.

I did buy a region 1 dvd of Card Captors though and was shocked at what they did to the first episode! It was edited with another one and done in recap!!! Arrr! No wonder so many Americans hate the English Dub. Love my region 4 dvds. The first episode is really the first episode.  :hello2:

Asterix is best viewed in French.
Life is Beautiful is best viewed in Italian.
And Card Captor Sakura would thus be best viewed in it's original language.

As for the marketing, that's the whole point.I call it the Industry for a reason.If we didn't buy this stuff they would not make series. We need them for entertainment,they need us for $.

Nevalana was simply the wrong place to go to. They did Babar and the Magic School Bus,which is great but not the tone CLAMP would nessecary want. Time-Warner was a longshot, I have watched that network since I was in 1st grade: They always gear towards boys. Boys/little kids.Doesn't matter now anyways, it got cancelled and got replaced with X-Men Evolution. Which was even more stupid because Marvel is in competition with Time-Warner's comic book property,DC.That was replaced with Teen Titans...To the point every series has to end some time.

I highly doubt that they did (and if they did, how on earth could they ever agree to cast Cardcraptors?!). I doubt very few voice actors of dubbed shows ever do, judging from the horrible way most of them pronounce the Japanese names.

Phew. I've spent the last days repeating Yukito's first "ohayou!" over and over in my head. I think I have finally managed to repress the sound of Julian Star - I remember what he said and that it sounded horrible, but I cannot remember the sound of it. Go me.

Yeah. Most of the people do that, just for the fame and money. But If I got the change to do the voices, I would make sure, that everything was kept the same. And I wouldn't be in the money or fame. I would love to do a voice of one of CLAMP works. Like come on, its CLAMP.

I remember those early days on Kids!WB.  Oh my gosh.   I was collecting the CCS manga long before they announced the dub.  When they did make the dub, I was curious but upon watching it, I felt like it slapped me in the face!!   O_o

Horrible!   It got lots of kids, who never heard of CCS, interested.  That was one marketing thing that went right for Nelvana BUT.... if you went on fanfiction.net back then.   How many people were putting down the dub names in their fanfiction??   Many!   It was so sad that the new fans were fans of the dub and would probably never learn of the true CCS until they go on a CCS fansite.   The only thing I liked from CC was the song "Ordinary Girl" but other than that, Nelvana's CC was just atrociuos.

It's a good thing a lot of CCS fans were putting up petitiononlines left and right against Nelvana right after the dub aired.  I have all of the CCS episodes, plus two movies, in VCD format that comes with Mandarin subtitiles.  Sakura Tange is the best "Sakura", I would ever hear in my life compared to the dub.  :D   As long as Tokyopop's version of CCS manga exists, at least, it should guide some interested fans in the right direction a little.    I have seen the Engilsh versions of "Catch You Catch Me" and "Fruits Candy" on YouTube awhile back.   It was a pretty good adaptation even if they don't follow the right lyrics.  It just annoyed me a little as to why the the Nelvana dub didn't use it.

The dubbed version of "Catch You Catch Me", in my opinion, is horrible. I'm Sakuura, I'm just a girl, like, and now I know, like, I've found a magic book... Come on! :dodge: Plus, the singer sings false at the higher parts (it's nothing compared to the French version of Platinum, though). I do agree, however, that the English "Fruits Candy" is ok.

While we're speaking songs - the one with the lyrics You're the Guardian of the Cards, you're the choosen one of every boy and girl... is kinda catchy, actually. Is it used as an insert song, or is it an ending/opening theme?

I remember hearing it in the movie, but I'm not sure if it came out during the series. >_> In fact, the movie was the only 'Cardcaptors' episode I've ever watched... and as much as I ahte their voices, I thought the music was pretty good. -___- Not as great as the original, but still good.

I just re-listened to the english version of "Catch You Catch Me".    Hmm..   As much annoying as those "likes" are in the song lyrics, I would actually take that rather than the sort of catchy: "Wind, Rain, Shadow, Wood, Sword, Thunder, Power, Sleep. Cardcaptors of the Clow, Expect the unexpected now!".  It was a cheesily done theme song for CC!   >_<

As for "Gaurdian of the Cards" song, I have no clue.   I'm listening to it right now to see if it can jog my memory.   I think, it was used in a battle scene or something.   >_>  Definitely not for the ending/opening of CC, but I'm not sure about Nelvana's dub of the first movie (which thankfully, I never got to see).

Yes, in fact they did achieve both.

in·fa·my
n.
   1. Evil fame or reputation.
   2. The condition of being infamous.
   3. An evil or criminal act that is publicly known.

Infamy is a no-brainer. As for money, an actor does have to get paid by the casting office in order to perform a role.

Maybe we should rename this thread 'Why Crapcaptors makes us wanna puke!!!" :D

Glad you found the dubs funny.   ^_^     And I don't know how Nelvana came up with such weird names that they thought were beneficial to kids who never heard Japanese names before.  Some were pretty easy to understand why but others were just plain silly!   :keke:

The bolded names are the ones that seem closer to their original names which is where, I believe, Nelvana thought of those names from.  This is excluding the names that were left un-touched, a bit altered, or cut into half.

Sakura Kinomoto ---> Sakura Avalon
Touya Kinomoto ----> Tori Avalon
Fujitaka Kinomoto ----> Aiden Avalon
Nadeshiko Kinomoto ----> Natasha Avalon
Masaki Amamiya ----> Never appeared in CC
Tomoyo Daidouji ----> Madison Taylor  (Just because Tomoyo loved making costumes that Nelvana thought Madison Ave. in NYC and clothing store, Lord & Taylor, would fit together just nicely!!  O___o)
Yukito Tsukishiro ----> Julian Star (Just out of curiosity.....Why "Star" as his last name!?  "Moon" would've fit him better! :lol:)
Kero-chan/Cerberus ----> Kero/Cerberus
Syaoran Li ----> Showron Li  (Based on how his name is pronounced in the anime which sounds like "Shaoran".)
Meiling Li ----> Meilin Li
Rika Sasaki ----> Rita
Naoko Yanagisawa ----> Nikki (And to think, this was the "rumored" dub name for Sakura!  :rotfl:)
Chiharu Mihara ----> Chelsea
Takashi Yamazaki ----> Zachary
Yoshiyuki Terada ----> Mr. Terata
Kaho Mizuki ---->  Layla Mackenzie  (>_> Very Americanish name.)
Clow Reed ----> Clow Reed
Yue ----> Yue
Suppi/Spinel Sun ----> Spinner/Spinel (Hahahahhah!!  Spinner~!  It's just sounds so......wrong.  Poor Suppi-chan!)
Eriol Hiiragazawa ----> Eli    (Sounds very mystical....)
Nakuru Akizuki/Ruby Moon ----> Ruby/Ruby Moon  (And the most obvoius name of all!)

And I just had to add this bit from the Crapcaptors dub...the name of the town was changed from Tomoeda to "Reedington?!!  :dontknow:

Also Eriol's full name was changed to Eli Moon  :dodge:

Eli doesn't sound too bad, in fact Eriol can be mispronounced in English as Arial, which is a girl's name. XD

But Moon, Star, Avalon... what simple and cliche magical surnames. And Rika = Rita? Really, is the name change even needed? Rika's a perfectly American name.

And let's not forget that Sonomi was changed to Samantha, though I don't think that was that bad of a name change, at least not compared to the others.

I don't think it's weird in Cardcaptors that everyone has an Engliah name expect for Sakura (excluding Syoaran, Meilin since they are from Hong Hong, also Kero, Yue because they are not human) To me this is like, Sakura is the only person in Cardcaptors to be an international person from the others???? sounds abit weird and confusing to me

They don't even tell us what country Reedington is in anyways. Why? There's no such thing as internationality, or nationality in general, for that matter. Think about it. As gathered from the dub, Sakura and Co. live in the Imaginary Country of Dubsâ„¢ where there's no such thing as ethnicity or cultural difference or somesuch, and it's obvious that Nelvana wanted to effectively eliminate all Asian culture from CCS in translation, to the point where they even stereotypically romanized Li's first name and intentionally invented Invisible Chalkâ„¢.

I admit I only watched the English version on the net. But as I've seen both versions, the Japanese version rules for me. I was horrified by the English. Not to mention I really didn't like the official Cardcaptors site that much.

Japanese is way better. In english they cut off some scenes from the Japanese version.

Japanese, deffinately. I was first introduced to CC which was in english but once I started watching CCS I fell in love with the Japanese, and I thought that the english voices were horrible. I havent watched CC since.

why of all the name is Avalon her last name anyway?
Title: Re: Which is better? Japanese or English?

Because Avalon is the name of castle back in the old days of King Auther and the Round Table.

Nelvana tried to make some sort of link with King Auther that way there the story would be viewed more toward the child base.

This didn't work, as everyone who has seen the Japanese Version (The REAL version) knows that the story wasn't based off that, in fact, it was no where near it.

At least, thats from what I've learned anyway from other people ;)

I always prefer the japanese version of a japanese anime. And from what I know, they  aren't
that good at dubbing anime in England. I've always hated the english voices in the series I've watched. they didn't sound like the japanese voices at all. I don't like that they changed the names and cut off some scenes in CCS. It kinda ruins it.

^ That's true! :D

Japanese version is still the best. I have watched the English version once and I hate the voices. Also the names. *argh*

And is it true that Tomoyo's "counterpart" in the English version (Madison) says that she BUYS the costumes for Sakura and not making it herself? If it's true, I'd really flare up. I like Tomoyo, that's why.

From what I've heard, Madison says at some point that she found one costume in a magazine (but she made it for Sakoora herself). Which is nearly equally horrible - Tomoyo design the outfits all by herself. Stupid Nelvana.

*scoffs "damn dubbers"*

I haven't really seen and heard CC, but I first went to its main site before I realized CC and CCS were different (in some ways, of course). It really made me mad to see their names all screwed up. Of course, fans as we are, we couldn't help feel a little disappointed. (Not that little!  D<)

But sometimes, people just don't care about the "little" details. They're just thankful for the dub. At least, the series came out for them to see. That's their reason.

It's such a mismatch.

Had CC has been released last year, things would have been a bit different.

Well, just an anime standpoint.

CCS could be a good entrance tool for TRC (if they decide to release it there).

Kinda sad. CCS is an SS-Tier Anime. CC turned into a D-Tier Anime.

It certainly would be different if CCS was released as CC last year. I wouldn't be surprised if a battle of the sides would happen. And I doubt that Tsubasa would be as popular, since many CCS fans moved on to liking Tsubasa for having Sakura and Syaoran. And even if CC isn't CCS, it brought more people to the fandom, myself included.

BTW...

CCS - SS-Tier (98.2%)

CC - D-Tier (31.8%)

Huge difference.

I agree with your ponts moezy-chan, good way to shift fans on the new series.
