Yes, they are based on Tarot cards.
In Clamp No Kiseki they talk about that.

i went to tokyo japan b4 for a tour. IT WAS GORGEOUS. then we went to disneyland but we had to wait literally 2 hours for each ride >< o well. its was fun tho. some ppl actually wear kimonos on the street and some ppl are really pretty ^-^ but the're so much porno around the more urban places in japan. the're like driving guys to go pick the best pic of a nude gurl. eck!!!!! so discusintg. im like *run away*

Standerd playing cards are based on Tarot cards. In the medivel ages, people used to use magic, but became presecuted. So they invented tarot cards, as A CARD GAME. Yes, tarot cards were a card game, that were used also for divination. THese eventually became the playing cards that are used for games (fish, poker etc).

Originally, the cards were designed as a magical tool, that could be hiden as another thing :D. Somehow (WOTC), cards are now really popular for other games (MTG, DM, Pokemon, etc). If the times are changing, and the world is going to embrace the old ways again, maby this is a transitional phase......

Me, i beleive magic is real. I beleive that if someone is actually focused, and wants to learn, they can learn this. I have seen things i will not post here, not many would beleive me. But when your friend can say a word, and totally immobilise our body, then you will begin to beleive.
