Ringu/The Ring.
« on: May 03 2005, 08:55 am »
Who here is a fellow Ringworm?  One of my fav movies of all time is Ringu!  Normally, I'm not someone who watches horror movies because I'm someone who's easily scared, but whenever the Halloween season rolls around, I always get tempted to watch a horror film.  So at the recommendation of a friend, I decided to check out Ringu last year, and while I didn't think it was particularly horrifying, I thought it had a very good plot with interesting characters, but there were a few moments in this movie that made me jump (mainly the part where they show Tomoko's dead body in the closet and the well scene near the end).  I also just watched Ringu 2 the other day.  The Japanese sequel  was even less scary than Ringu, but it still was very interesting, if not more confusing, and I actually liked this movie more than the first film.  The ending to Ringu 2 was especially freaky.  Unfortunately, I thought the American version of The Ring was very disappointing.  I didn't like how they made all the characters ten times snobbier than their Japanese counterparts or how they screwed around so much with the plot, especially with Sadako's/Samara's backstory, and the ending to the American version just doesn't hold a candle to the Japanese version's ending.  I'm still not sure if I want to go see The Ring 2 or not, but I've read that the American sequel is an original storyline rather than a re-make of the Japanese sequel, and it's being directed by Nakata Hideo-san, who directed the first Ringu movie this time, so maybe it'll be better than the first American movie....I also recently bought the Ringu book, but I have yet to actually read it.  ^^;;
When her leathery, crow-footed face turned towards my raised hand and said, “Yes, the boy in the Sailor Mercury t-shirt,” I sprung into action. It took me a brief 20 seconds to acquire the bokken (wooden sword) I had secured to the underside of our chairs with duct tape the night previous. Shouting “Japan BANZAIII!” in the manner of those noble kamikaze pilots from the War of United States Aggression (so tactlessly referred to in your history books as “World War II”), I charged the stage, bringing down the bokken forcefully onto the plywood table in front of Tiffany Grant. It was a tragic mistake not to channel my ki correctly. The bokken splintered into a thousand pieces, leaving me with no other plan of attack besides shouting, “You’re no Asuka!” as two Ohayocon toughs escorted me out of the room-SomethingAwful.com

From the clips I've seen...the japanese was way better...america just came along, swiped the plot, squished half of ring 2 into their first film, and then added weird stuff to their second....

Japan took it much slower, made it more scary, and added real characters and emotion in it as well! It's sad when the journalist woman thinks the curse is broken, but then realises her husband's dead....I think they were falling in love again.

See? The japanese had an actual plot, but the american was made to psych people out, and bring in money.

Spoiler alert!  Actually, the American version did focus more on Rachel and Noah's relationship, and sort of gave it a happier ending, which is one of the few things I liked about the American version more, but their relationship was never really very important to the plot of Ringu to begin with.  In the Japanese version, Reiko was actually more concenred about whether or not Yoichi would die as well rather than about her ex-husband's death, but yes, the American version was pretty screwed up and I still like the Japanese version more.

Did anyone watch Ring 2? The sequel to the japanese one, I mean, not the american version (which was even worse than the first remake)

I've seen Ringu 2 and I liked it a lot more than I did the first Ringu movie.  I still haven't seen Ringu 0 or Ring Virus yet, though. v.v Has anyone seen Ring Virus?  It's the Korean re-make of Ringu and some people thought the Japanese version was better, but other people like the Korean version more or like it equally the same, and it seems to follow the book a little closer than the Japanese movie, so I'm tempted to watch it, but after the awful American version of The Ring, I'm not sure if I want to see any other foreign Ringu re-makes.

I'M A RINGWORM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've seen 'Ring', 'Ring 2', Ring 0', 'The Ring', 'The Ring Virus' and 'Rasen'.

I've seen 'Ringu', I loved it. I also thought the remake was a little... weird... Rachel and Noah didn't seem to be in love to me. They had no chestry whatsoever. Ryuji seemed to really still care for Reiko, and I think that was very upset about his death, but she realised that she has to think fast. Remember how Ryuji was the brain of the movie? Reiko was desperate. I mean, if you're husband died, but there was still a risk your kids gonna die, isn't better to save the kid and morn for your ex-hubby later?

But, anyway, Sadako is the freaky and scariest thing I have come across since... ages! She never showed her face and you were like 'Agh! What's she got to hide?' and then... Ewwwwww! I cried at the end when Ryuji died, the poor guy didn't deserve it! I seriously weeped for him, and the way Reiko look the lose was so beautiful and quite mornful. I just loved Yoichi, he's such a sweet kid! (bare in mind, before you question me that I have seen this movie over 103 times now, and still counting. I've taken such a great view on it that I'm so sad.... I wrote an essay on it!)

But don't get me wrong, I love Noah! He was a right laugh! That bit where he's running with the hose, and it isn't long enough so he goes shooting backwards... It was so funny I cried with laughter. Not to mention him screaming at the sun! "Damn you Mr Sun!" Okay well maybe he didn't say that, but he was thinking it. I think the Japanese one was more serious and realistic. I loved Ryuji so much, and he and Reiko were get together. Best movie bond I've ever, ever seen...

I guess it's fair to say that 'Ring' is my favourite movie. ^_^

I know what you mean. I'm always dressing up in white to scar my friends. I scared the hell out of a twelve year old by showing her the 'Sadako' look. I can really do it good, you know! I have a picture somewhere, once I've found it, I'll post it ^_^

Ringu 2 is going to be released on DVD in the U.S. this September!  Yay!  Even though I already have that movie on VCD, I'm glad it's coming out on DVD over here!  I was worried it wouldn't since the American sequel is an original storyline and all rather than a re-make of the Japanese sequel.  I wonder if they'll be releasing any of the other Japanese Ringu movies in the U.S. and if they'll produce anymore American Ring movies, too...

Aaaah! I don't like horror movies anymore! I used to want to see it but my mother said it wasn't a good idea so I didn't. My friends watched it too, and they said it was terrifying. So I didn't want to watch it anymore. Im sometimes home alone and all those thoughs seem to come back to me and it really freaks me out.  :sweatdrop:

I saw 'Ringu' when it first came out and my cousin's wife showed us it. I was six then! Then I saw it recently when I was twelve! So, I don't really care about the raitings and all. It is very scary... But the actors are great and the characters are just perfect! I've seen the original over 50 times and I've never got tired of it!

More good Ringu news!  Not only is Ringu 2 going to be released on DVD in the U.S. soon, but they are also releasing all of the Ringu movies in a DVD boxset, called Ringu Anthology of Terror on August 23rd, '05.  The boxset will contain Ringu, Ringu 2, Ringu 0, and Rasen (aka Spiral)!  So, now we'll have all the Ringu movies in the U.S.!  All we need left is to get the made-for-TV Ringu movies over here and we'll have everything Ringu that's available!

I've got all the UK releases. Like I said on the ring forum (yes, I'm a ringworm)... I'm only getting the US release if I think it's worth my money. I very happy with the UK box set, it allowed me to watch the Ring movies in complete beauty... as well as giving me the cute 'Sleeping Bride' movie... and I got 'Spiral' for 99p anyway. So nothing cost anything really and I'm happy with what I got.

If the US version looks worth my time (good extras etc...) then I'll buy it.

I'm a HUGE Ringu fan... I like it as much as I like anime.

Anyway did anyone know that there is a Korean re-make of Ringu?
Yep, it is called Ring Virus and though I have not watched it, my friend said that it was not as good ><"

I have seen both US & Japanese versions and they are both great, though I did find the US version abit confusing

There are some good scenes (Eun-Suh's death) but it isn't a very good movie. It's not as bad as people make it out to be. Sun-joo is very wooden, Boram is just there and Yeol Choi is a drunk... As you will see... lol! The couple are terrible, they always seem to be trying to out do one another and I'm surprised they got anywhere in the film cause nothing seemed to get uncovered.

The Japanese version is always going to be the best in my good. The American version has a very weak storyline, I didn't get the deal of the horses, cause that's just not scary. The characters aren't as well developed and the couple themselves don't sell as well as the Japanese couple. The two Americans, though they did try to have moments, they don't seem to care about each other like the Japanese couple do. I think maybe the original roles belong to the original actors to me ^_^
