Jump Superstars: DS Super Smash Bros.?

Published By: Nintendo

Developed By: Ganbarion

Genre: Fighting

Release Date (Japan): 08/08/2005

Everyone knows about Japan and their craze for manga, anime as well as video games (more than NA anyway) right? Well, this month Japanese gamers will be getting a beautiful collaboration of both, in the highly anticipated title, Jump Superstars. The title is derived from the manga company, Jump. Jump is the comic company that brings us series such as Naruto, One Piece, and Bobobo-bo Bo-bobobobobobobobobobob (correct?). Okay, this game features a ton of anime characters beating the living daylight out of each other; all fine and dandy right, but what really makes this game stand out? The fact that this game runs on a similar engine to that of the widely acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series is big surprise that has even us NA gamers turning our heads towards this game.

Looking at screenshots reveals what appears to be 2D anime characters duking it out on the top screen, while a whole bunch of comic book images appear on the bottom screen. The function of all those images on the bottom screen is to display your "manga deck." Before each battle, every player is given rendom cards which are compiled into this "manga deck." During the battle, players touch the individual pictures with their fingers (Nintendo recommends not using the stylus for some reason) and the cards provide the player with power-ups, etc.

Jump Superstars utilizes both the bottom and top screens as well as touch control

In the demo, there are three types of cards; there are "Battle Cards," "Support Cards," and "Help Cards." The "Battle Cards" change the player into the character shown on the card; this allows you to switch between characters as you fight. "Support Cards" summon the character on the card to aid the player in battle by fighting alongside them. The game features over 150 characters from 27 different Japanese anime/manga properties. "Help Cards" perform what they suggest, they help you and can be used twice in the battle. The only Help Card in the demo gave players a speed boost; whether or not there are more in the final version is still not known. The bottom screen also displays items that can be used in battle.

Characters that you may be seeing in Jump Superstars are: (chart thanks of IGN)

As previously mentioned, the fighting system is reminiscent of that of Super Smash Bros. Y and B are used for weak and strong attacks, while X is used to jump. Pressing A will let you unleash a special attack and more special attacks can be accessed by using the A button and directional pad in conjunction with each other, like in SSB.

Good to see the good old SSBM in-battle chaos

In battle, players start off with 100 points, and those points decrease as they are hit with enemy attacks, and the enemy gains those points. The idea is to have the most points collected at the end of the battle. Strangely enough though, when a player hits 0, they are not out of the match, they can still fight, and opponents can't get points off of him/her. In addition to the point meter, players also have a "J-Damashii" meter. This meter depletes with special attacks and time; when the meter runs out, players turn black and white and incur super damage if hit. You can replenish your J-Damashii meter by making use of items found in the stage.

Jump Superstars, in terms of visuals, looks closer to a GBA game than a Smash Bros. game. However, the pace of the game, as well as the battle mechanics really remind the player of SSB. This is going to be a must-have for DS owners in Japan, and sadly right now the only way NA gamers canm play it is by importing it. With any luck, we will be given this game, or something similar in the future.

I say get ready for it. If it comes to the US it's going to be the next big thing. It's going to be so cool.

Awhile back there was a game released for the Nintendo DS in Japan called Shonen Jump Superstars. Basically the concept of the game was that you could play as different characters from many of the Shonen Jump series, including Naruto and other famous series such as Dragonball Z (of course). Unfortunately due to it being a game that a licensor would have nightmares and cold sweats over it is highly unlikely to make its way outside of Japan, ever. And now another such game has arised!

There will be a sequel for this game, with new Koma and Wifi enabled (online battles).

I wonder if the Top Tier Koma will be toned down.
