Title: CCS DVDs Now Out Of Print
Post by: Cardcaptor Takato on January 22 2007, 01:36 pm
I'm sorry I couldn't post this news sooner but it happened during the time the forums were down but according to this thread at AOD, http://animeondvd.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/13067/tp/6/ starting on December 31st, 2006, the CCS DVDs will be out of print because Geneon's rights to the series are expiring and it doesn't look like they're renewing those rights. This really pisses me off as I was wanting to buy those CCS boxsets sometime.  CCS is one of the best shoujo anime out there and my favorite Clamp series. IMO, this was a bad decision for Geneon not to renew their rights. I know CCS is an older show and it isn't as big as it used to be, but with Tsubasa DVDs coming from Funi just around the corner, there'll be more people who will watch Tsubasa who may not have ever seen CCS that after watching Tsubasa may want to watch Sakura and Syaoran's first series.  But with the rights to the series expiring and the discs going out of print, those people who will have discovered Sakura and Syaoran through Tsubasa will never get the chance to watch CCS unless they download the episodes via Bittorrent and not everyone has that option available to them.  Hopefully with the rights expired, some other company could come along and buy the rights and give CCS the proper uncut re-dub that it deserves. I know that's a highly unlikely scenario, but I can dream, can't I? If any of you have the money and want to buy the CCS DVDs, buy them as soon as you see them because once the stores are sold out, you won't be able to find them anywhere unless you order a used copy off of Ebay or something.

I have the original 18, the re-released boxsets, TEH BOOTZ and even the Crapcaptors set. The boxsets I have are still sealed :)

I'm lucky to have all of the CCS DVD's too, mine are individual discs but, not boxsets (as-well as 5 discs of 'the dub', which was all that was released out here.)

Just need to get Volume 6 of the Master of the Clow manga to complete my collection (damn having no money)

Dam*** I have the entire series, bootlegged >_< and the second and third season official boxset but I was hoping to get the first official season  Guess I'm resigned to downloading via bittorrent now >>; And agreed Takato-kun. This was really dumb of Geneon. CCS is a classic and should remain intact.

It's a really sad news to hear especially for us CCS fans. I only got the first 2 volumes of the official Japanese DVD boxsets and going to get the 3rd boxset soon, but they haven't got any subs. My brother has also got the bootleg version of the entire series with subs. but I don't think this will nessecary effect me much since I don't have a region 1 DVD player and hence all my Anime DVD's are either brought from the UK or Japan (or China for bootleg copies) I also think that Genon won't renew the lisence because loads of Amine companies are always concentrating on newer titles. Think about when Sailor Moon lisence was expired (Sailor Moon was the most popular Shoujo ever), but they won't renew the lisence just because they want to concentrate on newer series. I can clearly guess that is going to be the same with CCS

Maybe I'll get another 2 sets of the boxsets for prosperity.

Two senerios may happen from this:

1) If the series is out of print, links to downloads are no longer illegal until a new licensee comes along.

2) Someone else gets the license to the series, then (good or bad), they dub it and even air it on TV as a series. Coming on TV may be a stretch but dubbing it could happen. ADV recently re-dubbed the entire Gatchaman series.

That's a definate shame. :/ Really foolish to let the series go, when there's still quite the potential to profit from sales of the DVDs, but alas. Someone is bound to pick it up eventually. There's still a fair interest in the manga, so someone might take notice.
Perhaps Funimation could pick up the liscense. They could market it and Tsubasa together quite nicely.
