Title: CapturedWings.net Community Update (Please read)
Post by: D.J.P on November 03 2006, 12:30 pm
I know I've been absent a lot from this place. But there is a reason.

I've been working on a new site backend. Integrating forums, fanfiction, gallery and everything into one 'super site' and
the welcome move to a dedicated server.

To this end, on the 10th of November, the following will happen:

Forum Registration will be disabled.
Forum will be placed into a view-only mode.
Fanfiction registration and posting will be disabled.

This is to allow me to move all databases over to the new system. Set-up everything and make sure it is all working.
Expected downtime is estimated to be between 24-48 hours.

Other changes happening will be:

A massive database purge, removing threads no longer deemed necessary.
All users accounts that have not had a single post for more then 6 months (read users with a zero post count) will be deleted.

This is to help organization, and the make the database switchover more easier for me.

Any updates or a change to this plan will be posted here.

Fantastic news, my friend. I'm glad to hear about the changes and look forward to them. The move to a dedicated server will be a huge step up for CapturedWings :)

wonderful,i knew that this forum has got a huge potential which was just waiting to be exploited !
so the forum is going to benefit from a serious maturing,by cleaning abandoned topic and removing missing members who has never took part of the forum' life  :keke:

so it means that the time loading when we change of topic or when we turn the pages and the time waiting to post a message will be shorten since the forun will be less overcast ?
a forum more fluid, readable and organised is exactly what we need to attract more and more dedicated members  :okay:!

but during the two days of reshuffle, the forum may be perturbated, doesn't it?
i mean, are there going to be decelerations, display problems or impediment to post  :sweatdrop:?

anyway we can handle that since the outcome is worthy

Ganbatte!  May you have a complication-free switchover to the new system.

Off-line will occur within the next 24-48 hours as I've had some minor setbacks (read: weekend coming :P)

Sorry the delay. But rest assured change is coming :D

:D

I'm just waiting on a response to a couple of questions before I purchase the dedicated server.
I can't be sure on how long it might take due to time differences.

I will post continuing updates up until I take everything off-line to make the switch-over :D

Another update:

Server should physically be ready within the next day or so.

However I now can not be certain when the move will occur.
I have no control of the domain capturedwings.net so I cannot change where it points too.

I can only wait for Little Wolf to respond to my e-mail about this.
Will keep everybody upto date.

the cookie system as it is has issues which have been brought up many times.

However, I will not say about its presence or lack off. You will just have to wait and see.

Dedicated server is ready. I will be transferring my own domains over shortly.

However capturedwings.net still remains in limbo until LW gets in contact with me :(

Well another update:

Server is already and I'm moving all my domains over within the next day or so (depends on how fast I can upload all that data).

Bad news is there is still no contact with Little Wolf. He seems to have disappeared of the face of the earth :(

I know one can get busy with life however I'd expect an administrator would check in on a daily basis.

I know as a moderator of this forum, I am expected to stop in EVERY SINGLE DAY to see what's happening in here. I expect no less from the others as well.

Hopefully you can get in touch with him soon and you can get this project done. Good luck :)
Title: Re: CapturedWings.net Community Update (Please read)
Post by: Pikari on November 20 2006, 09:46 am
Well, being busy is forgivable - the forum isn't life, after all. Give our admins a little break, ne, Arcademan?

Whenever the switchover gets around to happening, we'll still be here. No rush for me, at least. ^^
Title: Re: CapturedWings.net Community Update (Please rea
Post by: D.J.P on November 20 2006, 10:08 am
Its important for me.

The longer this site remains where it is, the more money I have to pay out, and when you don't have much it can hurt the pocket :(

Working so much you don't have a life isn't nice. Trust me, I've known people that have.

One of my friends (has a different job now), used to work as a traffic controller, long days and when he'd get home (if he got home), it would be eat, shower, sleep just to get up at 4am to go back to work 7 days a week. That isn't a life.

Ok, enough ranting. Oh and I forgot the other reason: this sites resource usage, if it peaks again all access could be disabled and we wouldn't want that to happen would we?
Title: Re: CapturedWings.net Community Update (Please read)
Post by: Arcademan on November 20 2006, 10:08 am
Nope...won't give them a break. The administrators need to be available full time or what's the point of even having a forum.

THE WARLORD OF CLOW HAS SPOKEN!!![/b]

EDIT: SLi beat me by seconds. The costs of keeping this place up PLUS setting up the new place...I feel for you, my man. That's why I'm frustrated by the delays as well and it's not like anyone else is rushing to help out.

Well, that's understandable. I just didn't think you needed extra pressure from the forum members. I'm sure if they could help out they would. Good luck with it. ^^;

maybe his internet connection is down? forum life isn't everything .. i know that from experience. i was a forum freak last year and it really got in the way of my real life. maybe he needs a break? and maybe he made other mods and admins so that when he's away they can be in charge. if he hasn't been online for that long then maybe you should go ahead with your project SLi. If he knows about it, he should/would understand that during the time he was away, capturedwings needed to move forward.

just my opinion.

Just another update:

I'm just submitted a request to my current webhost to move 3 of my domains across, including my primary site, when that happens, access to this site could be temporary lost for a little while, if it does, don't worry, it will be back A.S.A.P.

Forums re-enabled for the time being.

This close was to allow the site to be moved safetly to a new server (within the my current web host systems not the 'big move')

Unfortunately its taking too long, so I'm reopening the site, however be warn this site could drop out for a while when the move does take place.

two/three days at the max. Typical DNS propagation (which tells your comp how to get to the site) takes around 24 hours.

Then the time for me to upload everything to the new server.

So, yeah, around two to three days.

I was almost thinking the same thing, as another one of the forums I frequent (Neo-Geo Forum) has been down since Thursday. I only go to about 5-6 forums but I go to them quite a bit so having 2 of them down was a little hard

When this is all said and done, you'll find it was well worth the time and patience :)

Well finally after 4 days of bugging my host, the domain pointers have been altered.

This site is now on a new server (note: this wasn't the big move).

I've fixed up all display errors, and I don't think any posts or stuff was lost in the move process.

Apologies for the extended downtime but it was out of my hands.

A post I made was lost in the move, I think. >_> Unless it was deleted around the same time, but I'm fairly certain it was on-topic for the thread.

I'm glad the forums are back up though~ Hurray. =D

(Edit - yeah, post was definitely lost, along with a cookie. Bleh. I guess there's no way to recover that post? The cookie was nice, but I'll have to consider that just gone as well.)

Another Update:

Been in contact with LW, and the domain will be pointed to the new server soon. When that happens you will get a nice page saying so :D

Also the e-mail domain: web.de and any coming from .ru have been banned from accessing the site due to SpamBots.
If you are a legitimate user with a web.de or .ru e-mail address post in the Help Board (guest access allowed) with your username and I'll change your e-mail to a temporary one so you can log in again.

Sorry for this, but it has to be done to help reduce the appearance of SpamBots

I know its been a while.

I'd hoped to have the new system up, but me having the flu slowed me down and then the converter would not work properly.

So until its working properly, I've brought the original system back online.

The site is now on its new server finally, hopefully we will see a marked improvement in site performance.

Update: fixed bug causing the forum not to display (white screen or connection error)

Forums back on-line.

Some changes:

Users registered before 1st January 2007 and with 0 posts have been deleted.
Intro Archive cleaned out (reduced from 18 pages down to 4 pages)
Test Board cleaned up
Trash Board emptied.
New post thread created (:P)
Last Song Syndrome Thread deleted and recreated.
Some further database tweaks.

Unfortunately the speed issue is still present. The above changes helped a little but not as much as I was hoping for.
I will keeping working on it, but I'm running out of ideas.

I've submitted a post on my hosts forums, hoping somebody there might suggestion something I've overlooked.
Baring that, I'll have to get my host to look into it (which I'd rather avoid since it may cost me money - the joy of self-managed servers :P)

The thing that is the slowest here is looking into a thread. The home page and sub-forums are okay. When you click on a topic to read it is when the horrible slowdown occurs. Responding to posts via quick reply or quote works great and going back to the forum page is again normal.

I've finally managed to solve the slowness issue.

It took an upgrade of the database server to do it, as well as the forum software.
As a result somethings are different/missing for the moment (due to the upgrade)

1: Themes - our custom themes have bugs due to missing/changed functions in this new version, they will be fixed and made available again soon.
2: Arcade - incompatible with the new version, will try to update - UPDATED
3: Forum shop - again incompatible, may or may not return.
4: Characters remaining on post topic/reply screen missing. Will return shortly. - UPDATED
5: Who is online is at bottom of the index page now, will see if I can change.
6: Recent posts mod was incompatible, will try to update. - FIXED
7: News forum topics not showing in all forums, will try to fix. - FIXED
8: Gallery picture not showing yet, will return.
9: New feature: Edit post limit time, after post is made, editing is only available for 24 hours after its creation. Edits after that time can be requested by PM a mod/admin.
10: Lost of Spoiler tag - will return shortly. - UPDATED

I don't think I've missed anything, I'll do my best to get the forum back to the way it was.
At least it is as fast as it used to be  ;D

Following on from my last post.

You might find some new things kicking around, but I won't say what they are ;)

Also, revival plans will start to be put into action.
I won't say all of them, but I give one to satisfy you all.  :keke:

The Calander banner contest will be returning soon   ;)

Finally the speed is back to normal. Good work, SLi!

And, just because I enjoy being a pain in the ***: you don't happen to know what's up with the avatars? Or maybe it's just mine... See, I tried changing it, but my account keeps telling me that 'the attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved'. Not that it's that big of a deal - I can survive without an avatar - but if it's a problem for many users, something's ought to be done about it.

The update of the forums must of reset some directory permissions. They are now fixed.

At least it is as fast as it used to be  ;D

Arcade is not functional but then, who really uses it anymore? Waste of space with the games currently in it.

bit strict. tvrage.com has the same rule, but its still a bit too strict :-S

No edits allowed after 30 minutes?!! Not cool. Thanks for for killing the Cartoons and Comics A-Z Game since it can no longer be updated.

Post by: D.J.P on March 04 2007, 08:38 am
I didn't even think of that.

Hmmm. See what I can do about excluding that.

Most forums have the rule simple to prevent posters from screwing up the topic by changing their posts.
Its more and more common, in fact excluding this one, all but one of the forums I visit stops editing after a short time (and that is a fair few).
I'll turn it off for the moment, but it might come back

Arcademan: Sorry about that, didn't even think of that need  :'(

ComicBloc Forum has a 15 minute edit feature. Neo-Geo Forum has an edit feature in selected parts of the forum only and I believe after a week, no edits are allowed. TOKYOPOP currently has no time limit on edits I believe. Since I'm a moderator there, I can edit anything. I believe a fair time limit on edits should be used here however 30 minutes could be a little fast...24 hours perhaps?

There really isn't much point in making a new one when the new one will have the same purpose as this one, why clutter up the board with another topic that's exactly the same as the previous ;)

Global Announcements are back!

I mean, awesome. The site's working again!

I still think this warrants a new thread though. AND a notification e-mail to all CW.net forum members.

I found one design flaw in S&S Returns, however. The tables are divided by dark brown borders, where there's normally supposed to be a blank padding, or at least a white border.

Funny how I still CAN NOT get the games to come up for me so I tried something else...my other account here (yes I have one other here) and guess what? My other username has access to the games.

Conclusion? For some reason, only my username has no game access. Case solved.
Title: Re: CapturedWings.net Community Update (Please read)
Post by: Kasawa Lanford on October 02 2007, 04:04 pm
Actually Arcade.. there is a eason for the problem as well.

When another board that I currently admin on updated to a better version of SMF, some of us found we could no longer access the game's section either.

Conclusion? Something screwed up in the update process, not sure if it was account related or not, only that it's not permission based though it has to do with some other code in SMF. Something that can't be fixed, so the only way around it is to create a whole new account and work from there.

Of course, you could always have that account deleted, recreate one, ask SLi to up your post count to what it is right now (and yes that is possible)

Naturally, that's your choice though ;)

I think it has to do more with the way my account here is set up. I'm in a unique position here but it's something I rather not discuss openly. In any event, my 'secret' account can access it which is fine. No biggie whether or not I'll use the arcade since the same old crappy games are still there ;)

Sorry, I cannot give myself a warning. Tried but the program won't recognize someone giving themselves a warning or a ban.

In many places where I'm a moderator or part of the administration, I make a 'regular' account so that I can view the forum the same way as a regular member. Mods tend to see things in a forum that aren't the same as forum regulars so that's how I can tell how the actions of the administration affect the flow of the place. That's all. No harmful intents in doing such...just looking at the forum from twin perspectives.

Instead of creating another thread, I'll post this here.

Due to the increasing annoyance of spambots, the Help Center Forum, which was previously allowed guest posting has had that permission removed.

It was really the only way to stop them. My apologies to everyone, but spambots are the scourge of the internet and this had to be done.

Posting this update here:

WARNING: This post might be a bit technical for some people, and for that I apologize.

In a few days, one of my registered domain names will expire.

This domain name was originally used, just so the web server had a name on the internet. I later changed that name.

Currently capturedwings.net uses that old domain name, to point to the Name Servers (that find where the site is on the net).
When the domain expires the domain will no longer be able to get the site IP (Internet Protocol Address - the numbers that tell where a computer is located).

I've sent a message to LW, via his journel contact page, advising him of this, hopefully he'll get the message and do the needed updates.

Note: Only Capturedwings.net is affected by this change. CapturedWings.org will continue to function, so if you are accessing this site via .net, please change to .org if suddenly you can't access the site.

Another Notice:

gmail.com domains are no longer able to register accounts here, this is due to a massive influx of spammer accounts using the gmail.com domain.

Note: This ban only stops new accounts registering with gmail.com, those members that use one, should have no problems.

Also if a g-mail account is your only account, I believe you can still use @googlemail.com instead (unconfirmed)
Title: Re: CapturedWings.net Community Update (Please read)

Notice:

If you are planning on registering with @mail.saratov.com, you won't be able to. A general search has found this mail to be associated with a lot of spammers, so I've decided to ban this mail from being used. If you use this mail, but don't do this type of stuff, then I apologize but you'll have to use a different e-mail.

Thank you.

As a follow-up to my previous post, capturedwings.net no longer works, when it will I can't say.

So please use capturedwings.org and let others know (who might not know).

Thanks.

Another update to CW.net.

LW has decided to let the domain go, as such only capturedwings.org will work for here on in.

I've sent him a message through his blog to see if I can get the domain before its too late (if it isn't already).
(I don't hold my breath, as I didn't get a response at all from my last message to him)

His last domain CSS&S, was never released after he let it go, kept playing transfer between registers, and will be 2010 before it is next up for expiration.
Last time I attempted to get it, greedy registers (read scammers) wanted like a $1000US for it.

Also FYI the other sites associated with this place also needs an .org to access like the Fan Fiction Site (http://www.capturedwings.org/fanfiction)

You have no idea, the host it was registered with was a pain to deal with. Pitty I'm stuck with them for 2 months before I can transfer to another register (stupid ICANN rules)

It may be a pain but in a couple of months it's all yours. Good things come to those who wait :)

Posting this as an advanced warning:

Shorting, I'm replacing this server with a better one (for less then what I was paying before).

While, I hope this server will stay up as I preform the move (as I've been told can be done), I will be taking a back-up of this site now just in case.

I'm not closing down the site during this period, as in past times, its just not nice to do when things are out of my control.

Server transfer is now complete.
Hopefully this server may be a bit faster then the old one.

Apologies for the extended down time, but it was out of my hands (DNS propagation - this took the longest- and problems with the Server Control Panel Software).

CapturedWings has been updated to SMF 2.0.1

Theme is default for the time being.

Additional settings rolled out:
reCaptcha added to registration.
Users with no post count now must answer a question to post.
Some others thing to hopefully drop spam attempts to a low level.
