i think this is quite interesting, since we all love manga and anime so much but most of the fans don't understand japanese XD it's pretty inconvenient at times. So why not let fans that are fluent in jap give others non-jap fans a few pointers or common words in everyday use; we could then be more comfortable, expecially when watching anime :keke:
we could start by the words' pronounciations (such as: konnichiwa :D itz easier to remember in this form than the org jap character) then slowly go more in-depth if possible.
It'll be great if there's a whole new section for this, but itz absolutely ok too to just create a learning thread to test it first :)

Yeah, I asked my japanese teacher (sensei..*cough* XD) and he told me with a frustrated look. Y'know...he gave me the, 'i-taught-you-this-already-how-can-you-possibly-forget' look. ^^; Heh heh heh...

^^ Don't worry, I get frustrated too. I don't think even my version of thetranslation is right. >>; lol There are many meanings for the japanese word 'kimi' by the way like you or feeling. Hitori as well like two people, one more person or alone. Same with 'boku' which is either my or I, which is correct on how you said it. Directing to the I is for guys only.

Haha everyone mixes that up in my Japanese class
I remember on one of our worksheets we had to translate it was like, "Minna-san, Konban wa."
and everyone was like, "Good evening Minna!"
I just laughed at everyone...which I got a glare in return for.

Actually its spelled like this -> "Ohayou!" for Good Morning. ^^ Other than that you are completely correct.

What about plurals?
In CCS Meiling is saying strawberries, and it's ichigo.
It sounds like when they say strawberry or strawberries they still just say ichigo.
So is the plural a different word that they add?

I'm trying to learn Japanese.
I get most of the vocabulary from Anime and am really trying to learn all the kana right now.
I don't have an easy time remembering the Kanji symbols.

Nooooo. Yukata (summer kimono) is pronounced: You-ka-ta
and Yokatta (I'm glad) is pronounced just as it looks, I believe, Yo-kat-ta.

Japanese Suffixes
-chan : Used between friends or with someone younger than you. Used between boyfriends and girlfriends.
-kun : Generally used for males, but can be used for females too. Someone who's close to you as a friend.
-san : Polite and formal. Used for someone at the same position as you or higher. You would use this with strangers if you didn't know them well. It basically means; Ms, Miss, Mr., or Mrs.
-dono : Indicates respect and is very polite.
-danna : a title used to address the master of a house.
-sama : Very high respect. Used when speaking about gods or someone like an emperor or king.
-sensei : Used to speak to a teacher or upper class man.
onee-chan/san/sama : what you would call your sister.
onii-chan/san/sama : what you would call your brother.
aneue : an old, respectful way of referring to one's older sister.
aniki : an old, respectful way of referring to one's older brother.
otouto : little brother.
inu no niichan : "dog brother" or "dog-eared brother"
(o) baachan : (familiar) "grandmother" or "old woman"
(o) babaa : rude way of referring to an older women .i.e. "old hag"
occhan : (familiar) "pops", "gramps"
(o) jiichan : (familiar) "grandfather"
(o) jijii : (rude) "old man"

And that's how you pronounce Yokatta and Yukata.
Japanese is really easy to pronounce since the letters don't change sounds like English.
I don't usually have any trouble with pronounciation, just remembering vocabulary!

I also have a really nice Kana table that has a lot of the Hiragana and Katakana on it in case anyone is trying to learn those.
I'm trying to learn Hiragana, since that's the Japanese alphabet, and if you can read and write in Hiragana you could probably get by in Japan. I'll try for Kanji after I get some more of the Hiragana down!

Your welcome. ^^ Glad it helped. The difference between "Koi" and "Ai" is that "Koi" is a love for the opposite sex, or a longing feeling for a particular person. Its possible to be described as "romantic love" or "passionate love."
While "Ai" has the same meaning as "Koi," it also has the definition of a general feeling of love. "Koi" can be selfish, but "ai" is a real love. Hope that made any sense whatsoever. :heh:
Matte is pronounced as "Mat-teh" or as I was told. Yes, I realize I doubt my japanese skills a lot. :shifty: Its just...I don't wanna give you guys the wrong definitions and such. :sweatdrop:

Doesn't koibito mean boyfriend? Because it features in a lot of shonen-ai....

Mhm...your right, it does. But there is only a slight distiction between Kareshi and Koibito. Kareshii literaly means 'boyfriend' and this is the same as the western (US, etc) understanding i.e partner and not just a friend.
Young people are more like to use the kareshi word. Koibito is rarely used because it literally means 'love person' or simply 'lover'. In Japan they have a healthy attitide towards sex and its as a big deal than it is in the western world (USA,Canada etc). :sweatdrop:

You know how Yuki says his name like To-Ya? That's quite weird, because the japanese pronounce Touya like Toya anyway....so why does Yuki actually accentuate the hyphon? Is it just bcause its a nickname, or is there any background info from the jap lang?

sometimes in writing instead of writing the 'u' which actually prolongs the vowel before it like Touya pronounced equals Tooya, people just write the '-' which means the same thing.. :) hope that made sense..

The wings are numbered from 1-12.
There are 12 sets in all.
In the U.S. only the first set is out right now.
The second one comes out very soon.
In Japan, I believe they are getting ready to come out with set 10.
They only have sketches up for 11 and 12 because they aren't close to being out yet.

A good dictionary site is Jeffrey's Japanese/English server. I forget the link, put just put that into Google and it should come up.
If 'dobe' means dead last.....then what are the separate words for dead and last?
last = saigo, saishuu
the very last/bottom = biri
As I understand it, saishuu is more like "the ending/conclusion" as in "saishuu made = until the end", and "saigo" is like "the last" as in "saigo no kotoba = last words".
"Shi" is death. But if you put them together like "saigo no shi" that would be more like "the last death". XD I'm not sure how that would work....

aniki is big brother(respected/formal in a way) as far as i remembered. Same goes for anue (big sister[remember Kohaku from "Inu-Yasha" calling Sango "anue"])

Japanese is not that hard to pronounce if you remember the vowels always sound the same.
a = "ah"
i = "ee"
e = "eh" (with more of an "ay" sound as in "say")
o = "oh"
u = "oo" (as in "pool")
And with sounds like "ai" it's "ah" and "ee" said fast together, so it sounds like "eye".
So it would be like "goh-meh-n nah-s-eye", etc.
Does that help? o_O Explaining pronunciation in writing is always hard.

R sounds different in Japanese then R in English.
Think of almost an L. Kind of like a Spanish R, but no roll.
T is going to sound a bit different in Japanese also.
Think of how Yuki says Touya. An English T is sharper than Japanese many times.
Also on many words you'll hear them pronounce the N by itself. I'm not positive yet if it depends on the word, or if it's just the preference of the speaker.
My favorite Seiyuu Seki Tomokazu seems to like to really emphasize his N's.

I've been studying Japanese for about a year now by watching Anime everyday with the sound way up so I can hear the words well and by downloading as much music as I can and learning the words to the songs. You'll pick up the pronounciating pretty fast just by doing those things.
Also, if you watch the interviews with the Seiyuu on the anime dvd's you get, it's really helpful for hearing how Japanese is spoken in a regular conversation.

I did that on a Fruits Basket DVD....do all japanese people say 'hai' every other word when they're listening to someone, or is that just Yuki and Tohru's seiyuu?

Hai is the word they use for yes.
It gets used for a lot though. Like here we'd be going, "uhuh" while someone is talking to show we understand. They'll say, hai, for that.
I've seen that word range from formal, "yes, sir." to very informal like, "uhuh."
So you can think of it as similiar to our yes.
And from what I've seen they do use it alot.
Ruby Chan, if you want to see some really sugoi interviews, you should get the D.N. Angel dvds. They have interviews with the guy who does Daisuke and the guy who sings the theme song. It's good to watch both guy and girl interviews, because guys will use different words than girls will. So, you can become familiar with which words those are.
I like how they say sugoi alot. For some reason I find that really kawaii!
I'm waiting for Fruits Basket 3 to come right now, I think it has the interview with Seki on it!

I don't know how to read Japanese, but I have picked up a fair amount of words from watching anime. Here's a few phrases and words I've learned.
This is probably my absolute favorite phrase:
Zettai Daijoubu Daioh! (Everything will definitely be alright!) Sakura's invincible spell in CCS
Ano/Eeto (Um/Ur)
Yami (Dark)
Hikari (Light); this is my favorite word because Hikari is my favorite character from Digimon!
Kirei (Pretty)
Watashi wa (Me too)
Koi (Scary) pronounced (Ko-ai)
Tomodachi (friend)
Ichibango (The most; your number one!)
Tachi (also); Such as Tomoyo-tachi (Tomoyo and the others)
Fujitaka (Wisteria)
Dare (Who); this is how I've seen it spelled on websites, but when Sakura says it in CCS she pronounces it to-day like the word today, but it's not said as one word.
Anato (You)
Desu - states one self like I would say moezy-chan desu (my name is moezy-chan)
Coi-chi (over here)
Asaka-yo (over there)
Doshite (why) pronounced dosh-te; the h is soft though
nani (what)
Doshite-no (what's wrong)
nandemo-nai (nothing at all)
tamare (stop)
matte kudasai (please wait)
keigo (polite speech)

I'm pretty sure I've heard the word "yaro" used like "b*stard" or something like "scoundrel".... So "kusoyaro" means "you damn bastard/ scoundrel" :D

I've heard that too. On my sisters CCS DVD's, she has 8 episodes from the first season, and Syaoran says kuso, and they translate it as da**. Although when I'm reading fanfiction, they translate it as sh*t.

Scary = Kowai (Koi is a way to say love! Such as in koibito which is lover)

Nice to meet you could also be 'yoroshiku' too but that's just a less formal version... I think. 'Mata aimasho' works as see you later also. But I don't remember. :sweatdrop:

REALLY formal first meeting saying:
Hajimemashite, watashi no namae wa (your name) desu. Douzo yoroshiku. ((Usually bow while saying the second part))
But if you do it like that, it may be a little too formal... It depends on who you're introducing yourself to, really.

Well, it's different with age groups and situation. One is almost always formal when meeting someone older than them, but not their same age unless it's a formal situation. (Meaning, if your first meeting is at a bar or social event, that is much different than if your first meeting is at work or school.)

It's actually easier to learn pronounciations for Japanese letters in general, rather than trying to memorize them for every word, since Japanese letters are always pronounced the same. ^^;
