Other than Spirited Away, this is my fav anime film. (I think they're both by Miyazaki - well done Miyazaki!)
This took my breath away, what with the fairly complex plot, and the new feature of there not actually being a good or evil side. It was a touching look on the mankind vs nature theme, and the use of visible hatred (represented as a demonic force) was a stunning twist.
Ashitaka was my fav character because he was so willing ot look at the war from both points of view, and only wnated to stop the fighting and hatred. His battle with his inner demon was very moving. (And the fact that he looks like Haku didn't hurt at all! :sweatdrop:)
What do you guys think?
-
I haven't seen it... but yes, Spirited Away is also by Miyazaki.
-
You shoulg get ur hands on it. This is an awesome movie (two hours long, like Spirited Away) and is one of Japan's fav anime films of all time.
But why is it called Princess Mononoke? In my opinion, Ashitaka is in far more of the film than her, and is a better main character
-
i wanna see this, and the only reason is because Kirsten Dunst is Kiki, and i like her stuff :keke:
like how i liked James van Der Beak in Castle in the Sky (also Miyazaki) that was an awesome film
-
Kiki? That's Kiki's delivery service, VexNet! I think you're a little confused....
But this film is really worth watching! I'm so glad I bought it.

Mononokehime was the first anime I had ever bought on VHS (back before I owned a DVD player) without seeing it on television beforehand, and while I've only seen the dub version (which I thought was pretty good, although I heard some minor changes to the plot were made), I thought it was a very good movie. Even though it's not my all-time fav Miyazaki film, it isn't my least favorite, either. It's somewhere in the middle on my list of fav Miyazaki films. Anyway, I remember the first time I saw this movie I was really freaked out by all the violence because it was my first time watching a violent anime and I didn't know it was going to be so violent. I'm kind of used to it now, but it still makes me cringe whenever they cut off somebody's bodyparts (although oddly enough, bloodshed doesn't bother me at all no matter how much of it there is). The only thing I didn't like about this movie was that it starts off kind of slow, but it gets more interesting about half-way through, and I also like how none of the characters were good or evil, and the animation as well as the music was very good, too. I still have to see the subbed version one of these days, but at least the dub is pretty good.

yupyup. PRINCESS MONONOKE ROKS. whats a mononoke neways. i have an idea but i don't think im right. Sai is pretty and i like her little wolf siblings.omg that blind hog is such a stubborn pig even tho hes a god. but i don't understand why Sai didn't hit those pathetic humans dressed in the pig skin. She kinda just hit beside them. I was like nononono. hit them hit them. yes i know, I'm violent ^.^
-
Her name's San...at least in the dub movie I watched. I feel sorry for her...she doesn't really fit in either world, because she's not a wolf, but not entirely human either....
-
I think shes better as a wolf. She can communicate with them and runs really fast.
-
This was such a great movie! I loved how the humans were fighting against the forest. The wolves were my favorite part. They were so freakin' awesome! The forest spirit was cool too. Though kinda creepy at the end, I wont tell why. I agree that the title Princess Mononoke did not quite fit but what can ya do? *shrugs*
-
It was funny when Asitaka was dying of the stab wound he took protecting San...remember, when San leaned over him, and he said "You're beautiful." She was more scared by that then any of the battles she'd been in! LOL
-
I luff this movie.... I think I luff it more than Spirited Away (the wolves, I tell you, the wolves!! And Ashitaka!) Hm... I think I first saw it when my friends and I had one of our 'anime nights'. We rented it or something. And since I loved it so much, I bought it on DVD XD. (Hey, I haven't had an anime night for awhile!!!! o.O)
-
ooooooooo now i feel like brinign gazillion dvds to my friends house and host a home theater for ANIME!!!!lmao
-
I really really really really like princess mononoke :noteworthy: to Ruby Chan
-
i love to watch princess mononoke... the first time we rented it.. i watched it eight times in a row.. cause i thought ashtaka was hot.. *^-^* but syaoran's better than them all:P
-
I used to rent it every week.....but then I figured it would be cheaper just to buy the DVD, haha. I looked everywhere around my tiny town and I couldnt' find it ANYWHERE! SO I had to beg and plead with my mom to let me order it online. She caved (thank god!) and used her credit card to get me it (along with the 2nd CCS movie and Tsubasa books 1&2)
I still owe her that money haha...
But yes, I love this movie to death..in fact, I'm gonna watch it sometime this weekend...not now, since my brother is using the DVD player...and my PS2 is being a spaz. So ...[waits patiently]
-
the part i loved the most was when san was hitting him with her crystal? necklace and then he just held her.. aww... *^_^*
-
'mononoke' means "the spirit of a thing" according to Nausicaa.net. so maybe mononoke hime meant princess of the spirits or something.
i remember watching at the end of december last year. i bought it and having never seen it before, i took it with me to the family camp in the bush. we watched it at night and the next day i was fricking scared of the bush around me... lol.

-
yeah it's reeeaaally good! when i first saw it when i was little...i used to get scared at those fake wild pigs...cos their eyes were black and i didn't fully understan dwhat was going on. it has so many messages...as all of miyazaki's has.
it's definately in my top three...but my favourite is still Laputa
-
yeh lol my cousin said i was nuts. but if there trees everywhere O.O and scary animals that come out at night O.O and in the bush for 3 nights O.O ugh ill shut it...
i like the part at the end when they gave back the head and it was so kewl watching them get infected ROFL im so evil but scared lol
-
XDXD very nice. my favourite part was when those ppl from irontown tried to shoot down the wolves but they were so fast and went *zoom zoom* OMG it was so kool when one of the wolves side hit one of those pointy sticks which sent San flying right over the wall XD
-
that part was so cool.. cause she jumped over and started attacking the people in the village place thingy... i like the part when ashitaka just walked in between san and that other lady (sorry i forgot name) and just grabbed their hands like nothing...
-
her name is lady Eboshi
-

Those blue wiggly things that appeared round his arm were so cool! Ashitaka was a much better character than San/Mononoke...it was sad when he left his village.
Does anyone else think he looks like Haku? And if you watch closely, one of the girls in the village at the beginning is a Chihiro double!
-
really whoooooo. and whos chichiro. haha do u mean the dude from Fushigi yugi eh, don't remember. *looks in maange*
-
chihiro from spirited away? aren't the same producers of both of them? <-- i know it doesn't make sense.. but you understand it!!
i gotta watch it again to notice how similar they look..
-
hm... when ashitaka goes angry maybe. but currently, howl looks most like a blonde haku o.O
-
Has anyone else noticed that Mononokehime has a lot of similarities to an older Miyazaki film, Nausicaa? Both movies involve humans trying to kill creatures by destroying their forest with fire. You have the insects and the Forest Swamp in Nausicaa and you have the animal gods and the forest in Mononokehime. Both movies have a main character who tries to understand both sides of the battle and bring peace between the warring sides. You have Nausicaa in Nausicaa and Ashitaka in Mononokehime. Both movies involve a giant being that the humans try to control for their own purpose but is a threat to not only the creatures but the humans as well. You have the Giant Warrior (or whatever it was called) in Nausicaa and then you have the Great Forest Spirit in Mononokehime. There were other similarites I noticed too, like Eboshi was similar to that lady who ruled one of the countries in Nausicaa (I can't remember her name at the moment, but both of them even lost their arm, although you actually get to see Eboshi losing her arm), but I'm too lazy to remember all the similarities. ^^;;
-
I always thought that the giant warrior deserved more screen time.
He has friggin' laser beam breath. That's hardcore.
-
wahhhhhh, i was gonna watch nausica soon, but u spoiled it >=( eh o wel. it sounds very similar tho, can't wait till i watch it. Can u dwld nausica online?? if so, can neone tell me site.
-
I don't see what it was that was spoiled o.O Anyway, you can dowload Nausicaa from boxtorrents.com.
-
ahaha i emant telling me it was similar to princess mononoke. about the theme and story. neway thx takato
-
really whoooooo. and whos chichiro. haha do u mean the dude from Fushigi yugi eh, don't remember. *looks in maange*
Chihiro is from Spirited Away....and in answer to another question, yes, Studio Ghibli produced both films, with the supervision of Miyazaki.
By the way, have u noticed this film is a PG, depsite all the blood, death and shot off arms/heads?
(And a blonde Haku? Ughh! Not how I wanted Howl to look at all!)
-
Which movie do you mean? Mononokehime? Mononokehime is rated PG13, at least in the U.S. it is, anyway. If you mean Nausicaa, I didn't think that movie was really all that violent at all and I thought the PG rating was approiate enough for it.
-
Princess Mononoke is PG over here in England
-
really? ill go check my dvd...
nup. my dvd says m15+ and i live in austraila *waves*
-
Am I the only one that wanted a series modeled after it? It was a great movie, it just left me wanting more.
-
I think they needed a sequel...like Spirited Away did. They left it off with so many questions.....I wanted to know what happened between Ashitaka and Mononoke....
Has anyone noticed that Miyazaki seems to like star-crossed lovers? Chihiro and Haku couldn't be together because they came from different worlds, and Ashitaka and Mononoke couldn't be together because of Ashitaka's loyalty to the other humans, and San's inability to live among them.
-
I don't think Mononokehime needs a sequel. It ended fine on its own to me. Lots of anime leave unanswered questions because the Japanese like to have their audience leave the movie theaters confused. That's just the way Japanese movies are. And considering that Miyazaki-san himself said that he doesn't like sequels, I doubt that a sequel to any of his films would be very good....
-
I really love that movie!! I defenately admire Miyazaki-sama  :noteworthy:
I bought the DVD twice :sweatdrop:
The first time I bought the normal version and the second time I bought it it was a special edition, did the same think with Spirited Away...... :heh:
Is it me, or do I really adore this movies??
-
I seen Spirited away then i went and downloaded it because i was a cool anime. Last night i just saw Princess mononoke, I liked it so much i downloaded it :)
-
I LUV THAT MOVIE!!!!!
-
I agree, it's a great movie, but has anyone seen Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro)?
I think I like it better than Mononoke Hime.
The story is simple and sweet, and the characters are so kawaii, especially Totoro :)
