well i think the story  could be kinda complicated

Basically, Subaru and his twin sister Hokuto meet Seishiro. He gets closer to them (especially Subaru) and then betrays them by killing Hokuto...creating the revenge theme between the two mages in X 1999...

Like I said, that's a veyr basic plot. I love this anime!

I love X/1999 and TB ^^ Although the plot is quite complicated and mysterious, I think thats what attracts me to the anime :) Ah. my fav. is also Subaru-san ^^

Neither have I, but I watched some X 1999, then heard about TB....so I looked it up on the net, and searched out pics, wallpapers, info and fanfics!

There's also a manga, I think.

Yep. X/1999 has anime series, a parallel movie, an TB has anime (forgot if they do have ovas or not) and comic :) Bascially TB hascrossover parts in x/1999 (or is lol)

If I remember correctly, Tokyo Babylon wasn't really a series, it was two OVAs....don't sue me if I'm wrong...remember I don't own, and haven't seen this anime.

Awww! But Subaru looks so cute! I preferred Seishiro in X 1999 to this version though...he looked better!

Seishiro is evil!
^^
Title: Re: Tokyo Babylon
Post by: Ruby Chan on May 03 2005, 02:12 am
I dunno...he may seem very mean, but there's something about him that makes me think that he honestly cares for Subaru...he just can't control his lust for power - in another universe, they'd probably be together and happy....

But they contrast each 0ther so well! Subaru is so innocent, and Seishiro is...not.

Ha, I'm reviving this thread...kinda.
Does anyone know if Subaru has a character song that I can download?
I really want to hear him sing!

Well, in Tokyo Babylon Seishiro comes off as very evil.
I haven't read or seen X though.
In Tokyo Babylon, Seishiro pretty much destroys poor Subaru's heart, but I'm thinking maybe, somehow, he really does love him in his own truly creepy way.

He does...in X, he dies instead of Subaru due to Hokuto's curse, which he knowingly activated, because he knew one of them had to die, and Subaru would never be able to kill him. He also whispered "I really..."

So I think he was confessing to loving Subaru. And Subaru began smoking because he felt it brought him closer to the Sakurazamori (spelling), I think.

But I didn't really like the OVA drawings of the characters....

At least they gave Subaru that much!
By the end of Tokyo Babylon I think I could've killed Seishiro myself!
Ah, but I think I would have reacted just how Subaru did in that series.
I guess that's why I was so mad about it!
Title: Re: Tokyo Babylon
Post by: Hira on July 17 2005, 01:27 pm
Tokyo Babylon is kinda like XXXHolics, weird things happen to people, and whether or not the problem is resolved at the end, there remains to be a lesson to be learned from it.  Most of these lessons display the corruption and hypocrisy all over modern society.  Take Hokuto, for example, there's one time when she says, "Whenever people see a tree being chopped down, they'll always say something like, 'It's so sad, it's so sad...'.  But, take a look for yourself, everyone's still buying tons of newspapers and magazines and hairsprays that are killing the environment."
Or Seishirou with his comments about the evanescence of pop culture, "You know, back then, the Tokyo Tower used to show those delicate and adorable porcelain dolls, but now, they are all replaced by pictures of Madonna and Michael Jackson..."

So, the main theme of Tokyo Babylon links to X:  Looking at so many corruptions and destructions, does our society still deserve to live on?

Furthermore...
There has been constant debates about why Seishirou betrayed Subaru ages ago among Taiwan fans.
Here are some of the things they've come up...

1. Seishirou is not evil, just a lot of pride.  When he takes the blow for Subaru and lost his right eye, it shows that Subaru has become the most important thing in Seishirou's life.  However, he doesn't want to admit that he has lost the bet (it's the pride that kicks in), so he lied about Subaru losing the bet.

2. This is also similar to speculation 1, the only difference is that instead of being filled with pride, Seishirou knew that Subaru belongs to the Sumeragi Estate, which makes Subaru his mortal enemy.  He's afraid that Subaru will listen to the grandmother and leaves him once Subaru knows who he really is, so he lied about Subaru not having any significance in his life.

Another thing, it has been confirmed that Seishirou's favorite hobby is breaking glasses.  I think it's because after he killed his mom, he wants to force himself to believe that he has no feelings of sorrow, so he breaks glasses and mirrors to numb himself as a reminder that glasses and human lives are equally fragile, and since there's no need to feel sorry for broken glass, there's no need to feel sorry for a dead man.

This is MY speculation, however:
I think, deep down, Seishirou is just another person who is unwilling to see the "good side" of himself, even though he's aware of it, and that he approaches Subaru because Subaru is someone Seishirou believes to never be able to become yet yearns to be.  However, Subaru (in my opinion, anyway), is no more than a puppet doing things that OTHER people want, and that disappoints Seishirou, A LOT.  Bottom line, I still thinks Subaru is the one who lost the bet.

But, it's up to you to believe who really lost the bet.
Title: Re: Tokyo Babylon
Post by: Ruby Chan on July 26 2005, 09:42 pm
Seishirou loved Subaru, I think...but he didn't wanat to admit it. I don't think ti's because of hurt pride at losing the bet....I think he just doesn't want to admit that he's got a heart. You could tell he loved Subaru very much though, because when Hokuto offered herself instead of Subaru, he agreed almost instantly. If he hadn't loved Subaru so much, he might have just disagreed and hunted the brother down.

Plus, he practically stalked Subaru when he returned to Tokyo in X...he was obsessed with the younger one.

Hah.... so I guess since I'm only up to volume 5 at this point, I can say TB is a great series!! :keke: I love the whole portrayal of Tokyo and its inhabitants through the series - really beautiful and thoughtprovoking. And I love how Subaru is so softhearted that he's touched by each of them. Gah... I'm dying to read the ending now, even though I already know what happens. T_T Seishiro~~~ how could you betray Suba-chan???

read volume 7 the other day at borders... this will be the 5th clamp series i've read entirely. My thoughts on Tokyo Babylon - Sad, unfortunate, dark, with a rainbow at the end of all the short stories, but not in the long run. This series is now my third favorite, coming in after tsubasa and x. Seishiro-san is just... delightfully evil. You have to love him in a sick way...

Post by: Pikari on September 18 2005, 01:32 pm
Just saw the TB OAV yesterday and... meh, disappointing. I guess because I was expecting it to follow the plot of the manga... at least in an abbrieviated way. But the two episodes are actually two unrelated "case files"... and they both involve catching a criminal - and Subaru isn't supposed to catch criminals, he's supposed to "release" the dead! Er... I guess it just annoyed me to see how much time was devoted to these random characters from the cases, and not the main characters.

Of course the main characters do get lots of screentime, and its awesome to see them move and hear their voices (Hokuto's laugh... OMG!), and the animation was good, so I don't regret watching it at all... it just really left me wanting something more. (I wanted to see more Suba-Sei-ness, dammit! And evil Seishirou! XD) Oh well... I'll stick with the manga. *hugs it* Now if only Barnes and Noble would get the rest of the volumes... grr. I know Waldonbooks has 6 & 7, but there's no place to sit down and read there, and I don't have the money to buy!! :sweatdrop:
Title: Re: Tokyo Babylon
Post by: Ruby Chan on September 18 2005, 07:07 pm
Does anyone else find the dubbed voices for the main characters (Subaru especially) REALLY annoying? I mean, Subaru just sounds like a whiny 12 year old, and not the great character he's shown as in the manga.....I can't really remember Hokuto's or Seishirou's, but I know that they were almost as bad....

What do you guys think? Or were you lucky enough to watch the japanese version?
Title: Re: Tokyo Babylon
Post by: Pikari on September 19 2005, 02:06 pm
Ah, I only watched the Japanese version, thankfully. I thought the voices for that one suited them very well.
Title: Re: Tokyo Babylon
Post by: AkaiYuki on September 20 2005, 06:05 am
Yeah, those English voices... Pretty bad.. Actually, they were some of the WORST I've ever HEARD. Luckily, I watched the Japanese version first, and didn't watch the English version (because I KNEW it'd be bad...) until my friends threatened to steal the DVD if I didn't listen to it... And those voice actors couldn't pronounce Japanese names for ANYTHING..

Seishoorwo? Who's THAT?
Title: Re: Tokyo Babylon
Post by: Tessaiga on September 20 2005, 06:23 am
I only have the english version... I remember I had to press "rewind" a lot of times to hear
what Hokuto said. Such a high voice, and speaking so fast too... -.-
Subarus voice shocked me. Reading the manga, book 3, someone said that she liked his
dark voice or something like that... And hearing this cute, sweet voice coming out of him... O__O''
well, it's not what I expected... No...
I've seen it so many times now that the voices doesn't bother me. In fact, I like them(don't hurt me! )
I'll buy the DVD with the japanese voices as soon as I can. Will be fun! :D

Lol.... yes, true. I finally got to finish the series now. Volume seven was... gah... what an ending. T_T Evil Seishirou is so awesome and horrible at the same time. And he's depressing, but I still must admit, older Subaru smokin' his cigs is hot. ^^;;;

Awesome series. But CLAMP is evil for making us wait all the way until X to find out that Seishirou (maybe? possibly?) felt something... T__T;;

But has anyone else downloaded the TB live-action movie? It was posted up in Chibiyuuto's journal.

It's..... interesting. The special effects were pretty god-awful, but
Show content
that Subaru/Seishirou confrontation at the end was pretty cool, if just to be able to see it in live-action
although I didn't care for the guy they picked for Seishirou. o_O His white eye was cool, though. :sweatdrop: Otherwise I can see why its obscure. :lol: But cool nevertheless, since it's TB!! I wanted to see Hokuto, though.. T_T But Suba was pretty cool. ^_^;

I'm reviving this thread again... OH my god, I love TB. It's so sad, and it makes you think -so- much. I just read TB a few weeks ago (borrowed it from a friend), and I also just read X.

Personally, I think Sei-chan did love Subaru the whole time, but he didn't know what love was and how it was supposed to feel, and so it was easy to convince himself into believing that he didn't love Su-kun. After all, at one point he says in the that he assumed from the beginning that he would win the bet. The whole bet thing was Sei-chan trying to come to terms with his feelings and understand them. But that's just me.

Somebody mentioned something about Subaru being a puppet and disappointing Sei-chan... Well, yes, Subaru is not a perfect person; he needs to grow a spine desperately, but that's no reason for Sei-chan not to love him. Yes, Subaru is flawed, but people do not have to be perfect to be loved. After all, Subaru loves Sei-chan, and Sei-chan is as evil as they come.

And I've said this in another thread, but Clamp has a special place in hell for the empty speech bubble in volume sixteen of X... The speech bubble that should have Sei-chan's confession of love. Gah!

Oh, and if anyone wants come text translations of all seven manga volumes, I have a link... They're fan translations, but they're not bad... She also has translations of X up to volume sixteen, along with RG Veda. They're not the same as having the manga, but... Actually, I've yet to read the RG translations... I'll probably do it over Christmas.

WOW. I just read all of TB, and I love it so much!! After I read it, I immediately re-read the last few volumes of X/1999. Now that I've read TB, Subaru and Seishirou's scenes in X seem much more deep. (X/1999 was a pretty good Clamp crossover, come to think of it. Some of the crossovers in Tsubasa hardly have time to portray their full characters.)

Can anyone tell me where I could find the OVAs? I've found them on YouTube, but they're in Spanish...O_o;;

Yes! You finally read TB! And like I told you... reading X without reading TB just doesn't do Seishirou and Subaru's story justice, nor does it do Hokuto justice. I'm glad you enjoyed.

Hmm... The OAV's... I don't know where you might be able to download them; they're licensed, so most places wouldn't put them up. Amazon.com actually has them for fairly cheap, from what I remember. I've never watched them myself. (Bad TB fangirl am I.)

I think watching in Spanish will do, only I've read that Tomokazu Seki does the voice of Subaru... (Hehe, he does Kamui in the X movie and Subaru in TB.) X3

Hokuto is awesome! I love her fashion sense! X3 And her funny conversations with Seishirou. Plus that one where she pulls a knife on him warning him not to hurt Subaru-kun... She's such a great sister.

You're so right. Knowing the background/original stories of the crossover characters in X makes you even more in tune with their characters. Maybe I should read Clamp Campus Detectives next. ^^

I'm going to have to watch them on youtube; I didn't know they were on there. Awesomeness.

And CLAMP Campus Detectives... OMG. It's as far from X and TB as you can get. It's fluffy and cheerful and happy. Well, there are some dramatic parts, but there's always a happy ending. I read CCD whenever I need a pick-me-up. I've always found it hilarious that the Detectives show up in X. Somehow it just fits. My one complaint about the series is the fact that the horrible, boring creature known as Nagisa exists. She steals Suoh's heart away from Nokoru, and it's just not right! Damn homebreaker. Grr. Suoh and Nokoru need to marry and live happily ever after. Besides, Nokoru had dibs first! She has no right! And she's boring and has no personality. Hmm... I really don't like her. Can you tell? I'm completely OT.
