Title: I got the DVD - Tsubasa Dub Episodes
Post by: Kazemon15 on May 12 2007, 04:53 am
I was turning in a job application at the mall and decided to stop by the anime store....and what do I see? Tsubasa Chronicle DVD volume 1. Out before it's release date! There was only one! So I bought it! I haven't watched it yet, but I'm ripping it to my computer to upload it on the web for TRC fans to see.

I just watched some clips...I'm uploading part one now...I have to say...to me...they donot match at all. The voices are all weird...Kurogane's voice seems too deep for me as well as Fai's...the only one who sounds actually good is Mokona. >_> And they pronounced Kurogane wrong! But..the voices do get better as the eps pass...I'm going to add a few more parts and then I'm gonna take them off youtube after one week. I don't want the members of youtube to delete my account for having these.

Tsubasa English Dub 1 - Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3aWqwQz-EA)

Tsubasa English Dub 1 - Part 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LE0YFS7d0JY)

Tsubasa English Dub 2 - Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSjTMgfT3rQ)

Tsubasa English Dub 2 - Part 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XG_C3Mzb_o) - Fai's nicknames revealed.

Tsubasa English Dub 3 - Part 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osvnDajWKpQ)

My GOD!!! My ears!!! My ears!!! MY FREAKIN' EARS!!!

Syaoran's English voice...awful. Sakura is slightly passable but it's too high-pitched for my taste. Oy vey!!!

Thanks for posting the videos, Kazemon. I'm kind of torn whether I want to buy the DVD dub or not but I most likely still buy it for my collection. Cookie for you

Thanks...the subtitles are very good though..if you don't wanna buy it for the dub, at least buy it for the subtitled version. After all...we don't wanna be thieves now, do we? ^^;; And ep 5, the lost in translation part...they actually translated what they said... undernearth their weird words they put the translation like this (enter translation here) so it's easy to understand.

I made my comments after the first clip and am currently watching the others. My take on this: those who have not seen the Japanese version may not mind the English dub as much as those who are familiar with the original voices. Yuuko's voice is well done in English as is Mokona's.. I like them.

And yes...while I'm glad you provided the video, I will buy the legit DVD. Matter of fact, I'm ordering it tonight. Again, thanks

No prob...wanted to show off what I got just today lol. ...I honestly thought it was going to be better...but you're right, those not used to Japanese, it would suit them....somewhat. I can't hear most of what they say anyway lol. So I'll just flip on the Japanese with subtitle and enjoy. Plus, I like collecting DVD covers...for some...odd reason lol.

Plus, don't expect them on for long...I use my youtube account to put my videos...I don't want ppl grinding me to the ground cuz I have a few dub clips.

I actually find Syaoran and Mokona's voices passable, but Sakura is ...ugh. Kuhrowgaynee and Fai's voices are even worse. And what's with the pseudo-French? It's supposed to be gibberish!

Thanks for sharing, Kazemon15.

But you know, Sakura has to have an affectionate way of addressing Syaoran before she loses her memories or otherwise they would have to skip the whole Chun Hyang world later on (Syaoran is able to defeat the bad guy only after he realises that Sakura no longer calls him only "Syaoran"). Since the dub doesn't use suffixes, I do think "Syao" is the only reasonable alternative.

Episode 5 really isnt that bad....it gets better as it progresses...as I watched the whole DVD, the voices do get better...but we musnt say it's horrible as Arcademan said, we're used to the Japanese, so of course we'll think it's awful...but compaired to most dubs, it is good, so don't start saying it's horrible. And do buy the DVDs if not for the dub, but subtitle. If you are true supporters of Tsubasa and CLAMP you'd buy the DVDs.

The subtitles keep all the honorfics and are really well translated...even translating "Tsubasa" [English version] in ep 3...I go....putting subtitle for an English song? ^__^ Well so considerate to the hearing impaired. But..I don't like it how they have only Japanese subtitle track....Spiral had English and Japanese, wonder why not Tsubasa?

Buying English DVDs means nothing for CLAMP.

I'll stick with japanese dvds.

Buying English DVDs means nothing for CLAMP.

I'll stick with japanese dvds.

It does have Japanese, that's why it's called a "Dual Language DVD"...not buying English DVDs means you don't support anime coming here in English. As I stated on a Digimon forum since they were being stupid about it too..

Quote
Some ppl are fond of dubs. No dubs = no concept of anime, no concept of original version or even the word "anime" at all. Some ppl just arent fit for pronoucing Japanese names right...and I rather have a good voice actor who puts their emotion in it but cant pronouce it rather than someone who sucks at dubbing but the only thing good about them is pronoucing names right.

And as my good friend onkeikun says:
Quote
they've tried the best they could to stay close to the original. It's not completely the same, obviously because we're not their culture.
Most dubs try to stay best to the Original...and we have to think....there are many other fans out there besides us and they try to make it for a wider audience...
On the Funi forums, a moderator said this...
Quote
Well, you have to understand there are two anime markets.  There's the casual anime fan crowd and the hardcore anime fan crowd.  Supposedly, this is an 80-20 market (80% casual fans, 20% "otaku").  Most companies elect to ignore most if not all Japanese honorifics in the dubs and the subs for the casual anime market's sake.  ADV has a policy that allows them to use "chan" in the dub & sub.  Geneon has very rarely used honorifics in the subs or dubs, but they will allow "sensei" or "senpai" to be in both the dubs and subs.  Viz doesn't use honorifics ("P-chan" in Ranma 1/2 being an ultra-rare exception), nor do most other companies.  You'll notice most of the time though that if the dub is allowed to use an honorific, only then is that honorific allowed to be in the subtitle.

So why do they do this?  Well, they figure that the 20% market isn't worth appeasing (even in subtitles).  Most dub watchers don't care about the Japanese cultural aspects.  Since it is believed that honorifics and other Japanese terms would confuse them (to say nothing of the American VA's not getting the terms right), there's no point in having them.

The reason I'm a FUNimation supporter is because they not only recognize the dual anime market, but they decided to make the dubs for casual fans and the subs for hardcore fans.  That's why the subs of FUNimation-licensed titles have the honorifics.

Funimation keeps the honorfics in subtitles...other companies don't. So even if it means "nothing for CLAMP" you're still supporting the reason why we have anime in America.

And youtube just took off the videos, so don't expect anymore dub clips from me. Can a moderator please post on my first post topic here that the clips are no longer avalable? It has no modify button for me.

Why are you turning this into drama, Kazemon? =| Sheesh.

Syaoran's voice is tollerable. Yuuko is fabulous and Kurogane got better once he warmed up into it around episode 5. Sakura's voice hurts my ears, and Mokona's isn't much better. I dislike Fai's the most, of all of them. Vic makes Fai sound so straight-laced, almost, which doesn't really suit him. There's so little emotion in his portrayal as well.

My only major problem with Funimation's adaptation is all the seemingly small dialogue edits that make scenes sound unnatural, or are just unnecessary. All the random grunts. Sakura's saying "I thought you were cute", in reference to her and Syaoran's first meeting, and that whole childhood scene of playing in the garden just sounded weird. Largely anything she says just sounds strange coming from "Sakura".
Some of the edits make Syaoran seem a bit less intelligent (?) as well. For example, Sakura's floating in the air in the middle of a crumbling ruin, and he says "Stay there!!". In Hanshin, after receiving the letter from Primera, "Hanshin? Where's that?" (Even though he was told where he was by this point.
That, and everytime Sakura says "Syao", I cringe. =/ But that's jut my purist talking.

Thanks for sharing, Kazemon! =D

Sorry if I'm defensive...I grew up on dubs...and I'm angry that just because they don't like the voices, they won't buy the DVD...The DVD still has Japanese subtitles in it, so I don't know what everyone's problem is. Sorry if I was being rude ^^ ....and no prob....>_> man, youtube took those down quick lol. I like Funimation, I really do. It's just like the whole Beetrain thing...dissing it because they dislike it :/ ....Spiral I think was their greatest yet... [well minus KANONE ><]

Except....damn you Funimation for making ripping DVDs very hard! That's the ONLY thing I don't like. *cries* I can't rip Spiral for AMVs because it keeps skipping!

I'm aware of that...

Except that's not what I'm talking about. I'd rather buy DVDs directly is what I am saying. I don't support FUNimation in other words.

And I noticed a lot of people are bashing Bee Train over Season 2. I hope you guys realize that they had no choice but to show fillers... Now unless you wanted them to cut the anime short and insert some fake ending that doesn't follow the manga at all... I hate when that happens because usually the made-up endings suck and you have to read the manga.

I think Bee Train is doing a great job, and I do not wish to see any Madhouse remakes. I know they made some good animes like Chobits and CardCaptor Sakura... but they also made some pretty bad ones like Yume Tsukai.

Well, I guess if you have the region free DVD player and can understand Japanese, no one can stop you. I guess as long as you're buying something it's not considered stealing, huh? ^^;;

Everything I buy bootlegged or downloaded, I always buy when it comes out in English. I guess that's how I am.

Directly meaning you have a Japanese DVD able to play their region DVDs or are we talking TEH BOOTZ?!!

Either way, I'm buying the Tsubasa DVD though I already have them ripped on DVD from the Japanese original. Where the money go matters little to me as long as the DVD is legit. Cool?

From the production company directly.

I meant the actual japanese dvd. Going to the store and buying it.

I consider purchasing dubs indirect because it's usually from Bandai, FUNimation, etc.

Now that's not necessarily bad either... Bandai replaces bad dvds, and they are pretty good about it too.

Cool. If I had a region-free or a Japanese DVD player, that's the way I'd go too

But those things are EXPENSIVE, arent they? The only DVDs I would buy in Japanese would be those never ever released in America [Digimon, for example, WHY BANDAI, WHY? STUPID *kicks them*] ....if I had a region-free DVD player....and 50 bucks per DVD and there are about 250 something episodes for all 5 seasons...then I'd go that way too...but anything else that is American released, I'll buy in America...Tsubasa will be the ONLY dvd I'll buy one by one...Im the type to usually wait for boxsets to come out. Guess I like Tsubasa too much lol.

Bingo! That's why I don't do it that way. Granted, you can purchase a region-free DVD player pretty cheap these days (around $50) and even a Japanese region DVD at a good price ($50-60) however go to the usual anime sites that deal with Japanese DVDs and you'll find the DVD costing more than the DVD player!!!

Virtually all of the anime DVD sets I own I watch in Japanese instead of English, especially Gatchaman, Rurouni Kenshin and Cardcaptor Sakura, though with that one, you have no choice

Kuro went from hot bishi to looking like $h!t between library eps.           il definatly buy only the first couple vols of s2.

I think its psycological with thir kinda thing. What you see first is what you like the best. Ie im not fond of hackSIGN jap vas cuz i watched the dub on CN first. ; dont hate me but i would still watch cardcaptors (but only if yue is in it) despite knowing how bad it was done.                                    that kind of thing. Its only natural that those of us who got to watch fansubs first hand to snub the dub. Once the dvds hit the shelves and it runs on cable there will be a new fanbase set for trc.

Buying English DVDs means nothing for CLAMP.

I'll stick with japanese dvds.
Expect that it does mean everything for CLAMP.  That's what this thing called a "licensing fee" is that Funi paid the Japanese companies with.  When you buy the R1 DVDs, the money does go to Funi, but the money that Funi profits off of is used to pay the license fees for the Japanese companies for more anime to be licensed, which goes back to the creators, giving them more support so they can create more anime.  The less you support the R1 companies, the less anime North American companies can afford to license for the U.S., which means the less money the Japanese companies make from allowing these titles to be licensed, which means less anime produced in Japan.  Of course it's your money to do with what you want, and I'm not an expert on this subject, but if buying R1 DVDs meant nothing for CLAMP, then why would they bother releasing them in the first place?  Besides, even if you buy the R2s, Bee Train still has to make a profit off of the sales too, so it's not like CLAMP is making any more of a direct profit off of your purchase than buying the R1s would mean for them.  If you want to be that picky about directly supporting CLAMP, you'd have to import the Japanese manga.  But even then it's still not an absolute direct profit for CLAMP since the Japanese manga publishers have to make a profit off it, too.

I got my boxset of TRC today...very nice case to hold all the DVDs in, well done. Started watching the English dub, trying to keep an open mind about it but honestly, when Sakura jumped on Syaoran and started blurting out questions, she said in the English dub "Did you keep the dirt out of your nose?" I lost all objectivity from that point on. I'll watch all 5 and give out more opinions soon. At least it's better than Crapcaptors

Now finished the first 5 episodes. The voices, still annoying but show improvement. Now, Kurogane's pet names are a little ugh and Sakura calling Syaoran 'Shou' doesn't sound right at all. The most unforgivable slip... C-L-O-W sounds like 'cow' and not like 'crow'.

For shame, Funimation...for shame...

Bought the dvd for myself, at last. =)

I think the worst thing next to the inconcistant translations for the japanese subtitled version (as in, they switched from happenstance to coincidence, and everything was excessively wordy, as if they wanted them to watch only the english version...;;; ), was hearing Syaoran say "claow". *shudders* Did it have to be Syaoran first? Sad sad.

feh. im kinda sorry now that fansubs of Gravitation no longer exist. rightstuf's subs arent that bad, but they put words wher im sure there raent, and they dont do honorifics, and stuff like that. their not too bad, but still. id like to see somehings to see the diference. =P

btw, i have a friend who's a "dubbie" meaning he prefers to watch dubs, so that he doesnt have to read the tv while watching the show.... i didnt tell him anything thats wrong, but im 100% sure once he hears Minica Rial's rendition of You are my Love (its gonna be awful >_<) im gonna pooint him in the direction of youtube. he hasnt even really read the manga, so his mind is untatined by the fandome :S. i'll be there to convert him over to our side =D
