Title: Origami
Post by: minty on April 14 2006, 07:06 am
How many people here are interested in origami? And what can you fold using origama paper? I can only fold a few things, like stars, a boat, heart, box, crane, t-shirt, I guess that's about it.  :sweatdrop:  by the way, does anyone know how to fold a lily? If so, can you please teach me how using diagrams? (If that's possible?) I've been searching for diagrams that show the intructions of folding lily forever but I can't find any.  :(

I love origami! I learned how to fold that stuff like a long time ago. I'm not sure about a lily, you'd probably have to get ome sort of book to teach you.

Yup, and for background info, origami is formed by the words "ori" and "kami". "ori" means to fold, and "kami" means either paper or hair. When both are said together, it becomes "origami" instead of "orikami" The number of things I'm able to fold can be counted with my fingers. :D

Diagrams? One word: Google

I can make a lot of paper models now since my grandmother and parents taught me. The most complicated I probably made was a kitten. ^^; A lot of creases, folds, and even cutting them out! LOLZ!

Ah, a lily? I think I have a book that shows how... If I it have it, I'll scan the diagram.

Anyway, I love origami. It is very beautiful, but I do not like MAKING it. I love looking at it, but I hate folding it! XD I am no where NEAR patient enough for that!

my neighbour used to love doing those, I never got into them, rather I should say, I never tried. :(

I have many origami books but never dare to make one.  Its so hard.
But there're two things that i can fold even i am sleeping and those are crane and star.  Crane and stars are usually used in wishing for good luck.  I collected them in a jar or big bottle.

I like origami. ^^ My friend is more obsessed with it than me, though. She decorates the walls and ceiling of her room with it, she uses "origami" in her usernames, and she tried doing the 1000 cranes. She's the one who got me into it really. ^^

I can make stars out of strips of paper, frogs, and a few other random novice stuff. ^^

Ooh, I'd like to hear the story of the 1000 cranes! ^^

Thanks everyone, for the replies. I like origami a lot myself, I haven't been doing it for a while but recently I just want to pick up some new skills. I don't know the story of the 100 crane, can someone please be the storyteller? Oh, can we post diagrams on the forum to show how to fold different things? I know a lot of people say stars are simple but they are so hard for me! I know that some people can use really thin straws to make flourescent stars.  :okay: I tried to learn but it's just too complicated for me.  :(

Okay, I'll try to remember this. I've read about it somewhere.  :sweatdrop: Please point out if I made any mistakes.

There was girl named Sadako. She was 2 years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. She grew up to be an athletic girl. One day though, she had a bout of dizziness and was taken to the Hospital, where she was diagnosed with Leukemia. Her friend visited her in the hospital and told her of the legend of 1000 cranes. It is a Japanese legend that folding 1000 cranes will please the gods that the folder is granted a wish. Sadako wished to get well.  So, after hearing the legend, Sadako decided to fold 1000 cranes. Her family and friends helped her.

Sadako finally died, only folding 640+ cranes. Inspired, her friends continued to fold her 1000 cranes. They held a fund to establish a monument for Sadako, as well to help people who also have been deeply affected by the bomb.

Soon, a statue of Sadako holding a golden paper crane was put up in her honor in the Hiroshima peace park.

Does this story ring a few bells now?

This story is sooooooo touching! Thank you for telling us, Ralae. Actually, I have an idea, can we have a topic for stories in this forum??
Title: Re: Origami
Post by: AkaiYuki on April 18 2006, 01:17 pm
Hmm, I know that story.. But the thing about her not completing the cranes is a myth.. Supposedly she actually folded over 1,300 cranes before she died.

But the one where she only folded 644 is sweeter, ne? XD Cuz her friends and family helped! ^_^

Also, her wish was not just to get well. Her was was not only for her to get well, but for no child to ever die in such a way ever again.

Did she finish her 1000?! *curses memory* I didn't knew that. I remember was she only finished 644 cranes. My memory is really getting rusty these days.

Awww...she wished that other children to get well too! that's so sweet and thoughtful of her. Now that I know the story behind the cranes, I think origami becomes even more meaning to me.

No no no, there's two stories! I'm not 100% sure which one is true, though. But most sources say that the 644 thing was just to make the book ((written about her)) more touching, you know? I dunno why they picked 644, though.. If they were gonna spruce up the story a bit, you'd think they would have made it 999 or something! XD But maybe that wouldn't work because only one person would be able to help her instead of all of her friends and family.

So you are right, there IS a story where she only finished 644, but I've read that in truth she finished the 1000.

I have gone to that website before, they have diagrams of the finished origami but unfortunately they don't show you how you can fold (i.e. the steps/instructions as to how to fold) the finished product.

I just use any paper I can get my hands on when practicing, then use colored paper when I'm confident that I have it nailed. And thanks for the Tare Panda diagram! I can now do something complicated to amuse my seatmate when my teacher is giving a boring lecture. :D

This is so cool! I love origami! I like folding cranes! But butterflies are my favorite.
However, I am trying to fold a thousand cranes for my Aunt Miko. She lives in Japan and she is sick. I Only have about 100 so far though.
I wanted to say something else about the story of 1000 cranes and the girl, Sadako. Every year on August 6-- Peace Day, people place thousands of paper cranes beneath her statue. They make the wish that is engraved on the base of the Statue: This is our cry, this is our prayer; peace in the world.
I wish I could fold a crane just to place beneath her statue. This would make me happy.

I love origami and I would love any diagrams posted here.

I'm making cranes, flowers, butterflies, and stars for my mom for mothers' day coming up...
I still have a long way to go...but I still have some time...

Crystal_Wings, I hope your aunt gets well soon...
also, I'll try to post the story under the "Storytime" thread....

neat!
I tried to make something from a Japanese origami book, but I was only looking at the pictures.
It was like 3 am. I gave up. (i later found out it was supposed to be an origami girls' day doll)

The thing I find about origami diagrams is that, sometimes it's really hard to follow the instructions because the diagrams are not 3D and like Quatre said, once you mess up one step, the whole thing goes wrong. I had this diagram showing the instruction to fold a lily and it took me sooooooooo long to figure out how to do it but I can finally do it now!! :D

I've been to Hiroshima and seen the statue of Sadako. There are thousands, porbably millions of crans all over the peace park there. People make chains and send them from all over the world and put them up. I will scan the photos I took there later. They're so pretty but at the same time its so depressing.

I can do cranes, stars and frogs. My host sister bought me some paper when I was over there. So here's my crane chain in my room
