Not sure if anyone's mentioned this...but has anyone ever wondered what the 'D' in 'Fai D. Flowright' actually stands for?
I never did, but I was avoiding over-the-easter-holidays homework like the plague sat in bed watching Firefly, and flicking through a Tsubasa volume when I suddenly thought,
'...I wonder what the 'D' in Fai's name stands for?'
...This could either a) be the topic of great debate, or b (and far more likely...) ) a sign that I need to get out more.
But, anyway. What do you guys think the D in Fai's name stands for?
(Obviously, I guess it's a middle name. But...what? Ahh. An unsolved mystery...
...
...yeah. It's B. I really need a life. And fast.)
-
that is a real mystery...
come to think of it they haven't really mentioned it anywhere have they??
is it like his father's name or something? or just a made up one?

I don't know...(do we actually know ANYTHING about Fai's parents? ...Does he even HAVE parents? Oh no, don't get me started!)
But, yes...it is a mystery. Maybe it's one of CLAMP's little quirks that we're just going out of our way like the fans we are to psychoanalyse...
...
...Oh well. Works for me. *cracks knuckles* Any suggestions?
-

may be your right... they might have put it in to make the name sound impressive?
fye flowright doesn't sound as nice as fye d flowright....
i wonder if this'll somehow help in the fye's past thing...
-

I don't know. But...I agree with your point about Fai D. Flowright sounding far more impressive than 'Fai Flowright'.
Maybe that's the whole reason? But I doubt we'll let it rest at that, huh?
-
I'm sure there's some meaning behind his entire name. CLAMP may have been symbolizing him as someone in real life....though, that's just in my theory :sweatdrop:
-
Hm.. that's a good question. I was wondering what it standed for too.
-
Let me think...
Fai Dirk Flowright.
Fai Dorky Flowright.
Fai Dreamy Flowright.
Fai Dangle Flowright.
Fai Duh Flowright.
Fai Dee Flowright. (XD)
Fai Doodle Flowright.
.... Okay, I'm clueless.
-
It stands for Danielle! Because he is secretly a she! O HO HO HO!
XP Nahhh... I'm totally sugar high right now. But it's probably going to be something English-sounding if it's ever revealed. British, perhaps. Or french....
-
Changed my mind. I'm unlocking this topic, because I think it's worthy
of its own thread. Let's just try and keep it somewhat on topic. ^_^

*salutes* Aye, aye!
(Hey, suu_no_clover, I like that idea. My friend keeps saying Fai is a woman in disguise...with hormone problems to explain the lack of chest he has. But, we all know he's a guy...right?)
Sad thing is, all the 'D' names I come up with sound really...uh...bad...when put in context with his full name.
Fai 'Daniel' Flowright? ...Nothing wrong with the name Daniel...but...uh...no.
Same with, say, Dean, David, Derek...I would say it's some fancy japanese name, but most people have gathered that Fai is western influenced, like Russia...(the Russian characters in his speech and the general coldness of Ceres?) so...maybe it's a fancy Russian name? o_o Does anyone know any?
-
Dmitrov? I love that name. Fai Dmitrov Flowright. Hmm... Do you think it fits?
-

...That is really quite spiffy XD Fai Dmitrov Flowright...I like it. Any others you know?
Ahhh...we're probably just fangirling too much. But it's so much fun! XD
-

XD Yes it is.
I googled 'Russian names,' and this is what I came up with.
A Dictionary of Period Russian Names (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/paul/)
Russian Names and their Nicknames (http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Track/7635/names.html)
^_^
-
Well...I think we're beginning to see Fai as Russian.
Aw well. It fits. *goes to find a bottle to smash into Fai and christen him Russian*
...Actually, that might not be a good idea.
Demetri...Or is it Demitri? XD I like that one too.
-
Going with what Rusty said a while back, made me remember a novel I read a long time ago set in Russia. And that, traditionally at least, your middle name takes the name of your father, plus 'ovich' (or 'ovna', for girls). So if your father was "Dmitrov" your middle name would be "Dmitrovich".... "Dmitrovnich"?? Lol, I don't know. I'm not Russian. Something like that. And, yeah... we have no idea if Fai is either. After all, how much of a Russian name is "Ashura"? Eeh... about as much as "Sakura" and "Syaoran" are Arabian names. Okay, whatever, CLAMP...
*stops thinking* o_o;
Edit: And Fai is completely guy! No argument. <___<
Edit again: Hah... I googled it to make sure I had it right. XD http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/russian_history_culture/63192
I had to laugh at that article, too. How interesting, ne? XD
Russians love word play, especially with names and nicknames. Some examples include: Sergei=Seriozha, Maria=Masha,Mashka, Tatiana=Tasha, Tatya, Ivan=Ivanushka and so many, many more. It is a sign of pure affection.
So, if you have a Russian in your life, you can gauge your loved one's affection for you by the number of "names" that have been bestowed. Some nicknames can be quite fun and nonsensical, having no translation.
^^;;

Side note: The nickname thing is true for pretty much all Slavic countries (countries that speak Slavic language, therefore have Slavic names). You can't exactly say names like Dimitrov and such are Russian... they are Slavic names..... just as you can't call the alphabet used in Russian language as "Russian alphabe", the Russians or most of Eastern Europe will be quick to tell you that it's "Cyrillic alphabet".
Back to topic:
No, I don't think Fai's middle name will be Slavic one. If that is the case, then his last name would have to be Slavic too. "Flowright" is definilty not a Slavic or Eastern European name...it's definitly Western European.
-
I was just trying to think of different spellings for Fai's name, so that maybe I could see if it's a real surname, and what origins it might have, when I accidentally typed in the word "Fluorite" and I looked at it for a while, and thought, "I could totally see CLAMP naming a character after a dental hygiene product. That make perfect sense!"
In which case maye his middle name is "Dentist." XD

I couldn't help but burst out laughing at that XD Brilliant! lol
-
Dentist! XD
Fai: Open wiiide!~
Kurogane: I'd rather die!
How about Dietrich then? I like that name...
-
Edit: And Fai is completely guy! No argument. <___<
No arguments there Captain! *salutes*
And the nickname thing...well. Nicknames = affection?
...This whole 'Fai' and 'Russian' thing just gets better and better. *insert KuroFai fangirl grin here*
...I love the Dentist thing by the way. XD 'Fluorite'...haha.
-
i have never thought of what D. means. it's absolutely a mistery i hope that someday CLAMP will reveal the answer for us.
-
Fai Does Flowright? (my little brother came up with that one) But it sounds kinda good.
I'll bet the D is just an emphisis to make the name sound a whole lot better.
(If it does stand for anything I'd like to know)
-
...I love the Dentist thing by the way. XD 'Fluorite'...haha.
Me too. Hmm... Fai taking care of Kurogane at the dentist's office... XD
Fai Does Flowright?
...Sorry. Not EVEN touching that one.
-
The 'Fluorite' one is brilliant.
Someone should go and find the person who writes that story on FF.net 'Curriculum Vitae' and suggest a Dentist theme for one chapter XD
*loves that story*
--Edit-- Jeanette just told me it's written by Mizu-Tenshi (DOY. Of course it is ==; Stupid me)
Kyaaaaa...I'm still sticking with my theory on a Russian name. Will CLAMP ever tell us? We can only guess...

Hehe dentist...Fai sticking things in Kuro's mouth...hehehe.
I agree with the Russian thing too actually. Although I really wish Fai's language was more like Mandarin or French because it sounds so pretty. But Russian rocks too.
-
Russian... i hope not ^^ It doesn't really suits him. I don't know, i think French would be better.
And about "D" I think it was done to make Fai's name sound strange - to make a bigger difference between the worlds... something like that :sweatdrop:
-
hopefully CLAMP will reveal his whole whole name or else i will go insane..but i defintely like Fai Dee f-something (forgot how to spell his last name T.T im a horrible fan girl) the best :D
-
Honestly speaking, i think CLAMP may have put in the D. just to make the name sound complete as one of the chatters? hehe said. fai flowright sounds a bit dull. maybe it's just for their weird sense of humor???? but i guess Fai Demitri Flowright sounds marvelously good right?
-
Yeah, I strongly think that the "D" is put in their to make the name sound complete, and impressive. Because I don't like the "F F" sound that much, so what better way than to seperate it with a "D"? Haha I was just thinking of "Flows right" so "Fai D. Flows right!!!" hahahaha.... okay, I'm seriously weird.
EDIT: It's like someone asking, "Does Fai D. Flow right?"
-
^ "sweatdrop"
All I can think of is that the "D" must be European-sounding.... I'm lost.
-
Hahaha...all those comments are fun to read!!!!! *squeal* anyway, since Fai is blonde and has blue eyes and all so maybe CLAMP meant for that name (Fye D. Flowright) to sound and look European since it fits Fai's physical characteristics perfectly. i mean, it does sounds kinda american-nish hehe with that spelling Fye....instead of Fai. But i prefer the latter.
-
Fai Dadentist ????
ok
im lost
-
I seriously have no idea what it could stand for....it's just another one of Fai's many mysteries.
This is how I think it came to be..
A very bored Fai: Hmmm.... Now that I think about it Fai Flowright just doesn't flow right. *laughs to himself*Â Oh I know! Why don't I just make up a middle initial and when people ask about it I'll change the name everytime! Now let's see.....Fai H Flowright?.....nah..Fai X Flowright?... no that sounds weird....
And so on until finally he just decided to use the letter D.
Why D? Another mystery.....
Ok that was just very stupid of me... :heh:
-
UWaa... Does Fai D. Flow Right? sounds soooo corny! hehehe. Seriously, CLAMP may have just put the D. in to make the name sound European.
-
..Uh...okay...No more Flow right jokes, okay people? I'm going 'NOOOO' everytime I see one...XD
-
I just had to bring this topic back into daylight!
Since I'm used to the German version, I always thought his name was "Fye de Flourite" and I have to say I like it best because it just sounds so elegant, blue, pretty and curvy. So I never thought about the D. But if CLAMP spells it "Fay D. Flourite" in the official book, there has to be something about his second name. Well, what could it be? I personally am not a big fan of Russia-Fye. I always thought of him as somewhat French, not only because of his name.
But "Dietrich" is a funny idea :D Though I don't think it fits him so much. What about "Detlef"? It's a terrible name, but it's just the gay name :haha:
So, I still am thinking about nice European names *thiiiinks* maybe there's something cute here in Germany that doesn't sound too German, though...
I once knew a boy who's name was Dino, how about that? Fye Dino Flourite? :hehe:
By the way, I found a German page for rare boy's names. There were some nice ones: Dion, Darian, Devin, for example. :keke:
-
hmmm..... did anyone think of "demon"? I know its crazy... but what if.....
-
I just had to bring this topic back into daylight!
.But if CLAMP spells it "Fay D. Flourite" in the official book, there has to be something about his second name. Well, what could it be?
D: Flourite (as mentioned before) makes me think of toothpaste. It's weird, and I highly doubt that Fai has any deep connections to toothpaste in his life (although he does - as do many other anime characters - have a classic 'Crest' smile XDDD)
-
Maybe CLAMP's just a fan of One Piece. (Monkey D. Luffy, Portgas D. Ace....)Â
Or maybe everyone in Japan just thinks the "D" initial sounds cool. :heh:
Seriously, though, some One Piece fans think that knowing what the "D" in Luffy's name means is a key element in uncovering the identity of his relatives, so maybe the same thing goes for Fai? Maybe his middle initial will give us some kind of clue of his parentage or rank.
-

Or maybe we're just really, really obsessive and silly? =D Personally, I think I'ma vote on the latter.
Huh...Fai 'Dylan' Flowright just popped into my head, along with a big fat 'NO WAI. STFU.' XD;; Oh dear.
-
Is it bad that I've given some serious thought to this before now?
Yes, I am silly and obsessive.
Although I like the idea of the "D" standing for something Russian (because of the nicknames XD), I think it's purely there because it sounds better. Always thought Fai D. Flowright had a nice ring to it.
But the dentist idea so wins.
-
hmm...i don know too.maybe it is just his name??say, like in one piece,Monkey D Luffy.it is just like europeans name.i've noticed that anyone his/her name has D or somewhat else, they're just like funny person.and mysterious too..... *shiver* ^__^
