I ask this question because I always hear/read complains "oh my internet is so slow."
Dial-up » you connect by plugging a telephone line from the wall jack into your computer and use some program like NetZero or AOL. max speeds of 56kbps (that's kiloBITS not BYTES)
DSL » the telephone line from the wall jack is plugged into a DSL modem then plugged into your computer through an ethernet port. max speeds of 3mbps (US) or 20+mbps (anywhere but the US)
Satellite » this includes internet access such as Verizon's EVDO service, or any other "wireless broadband" service. max speeds of 300kbps (US) or 5mbps (anywhere but the US)
Cable » a coaxial line is plugged into a cable modem and connected to your PC via an ethernet cable. max speeds of 5mbps (US) or over 100mbps (anywhere but the US)
Fiber » fiber optics wired straight to your house and connected to your PC via ethernet/gigabit ethernet. max speeds of 1+gbps

I'm on wireless, so that makes it satellite I guess...
Oh, and the thread should be placed in the "What Board" instead, since it starts with the word "what". :sweatdrop:

Im on Dial-Up... (don't you just pity me?)

Topic moved.
To answer the question, I'm on dial-up. :D
But sometimes I also go to WiFi hotspots for highspeed internet... usually when I have something I need to download/upload.
-
Finally on wireless (satellite)... :keke:
-
Cable (10MBit Down/256KBit Up) - Primary Net Connection
ADSL (1.5MBit Down/256KBit Up) - Backup Connection and download connection (cause its unlimited data :P)
- ADSL sucks out here in Aus cause our Telco (Telstra - or Hell$tra as some of us like to call it) limit us to maximum of that (unless you are lucky enough to have a provider with their own DSLAMS - I'm getting technical there :P)

My university has an awesome DSL and wireless service, but most of the time I use the DSL since the wireless doesn't work in my dorm room. (I guess they don't figure people use wireless in the dorm rooms themselves, since the wireless works right outside the door. XD) My home is on dial-up, but I'm hoping my parents will get a decent service this summer. Maybe. Otherwise I'll be stuck waiting till August to get episodes of Tsubasa and xxxHOLiC. ><

I'm on DSL. DSL = <3 I used to have dial-up, but now that I have DSL, I'm never going back! Fast downloads, bittorrent, webcam services, and my own video maker.
-
well wireless could be wifi or satellite :sweatdrop: wifi is short ranged and covered by an antenna while satellite is broadcasted from a satellite.
it's really sad how the US used to have the #1 fastest broadband connection in the world and has dropped a lot... you can get 20+mbps DSL in countries like South Korea or China for FREEE or for a small amount of money..

Im on Cable :D

I have a wireless conection (at least from my house to the provider, i dont think there is any satelite involved)... it's speed is supposed to be 64 kbps, but it is normally around 100 kbps, but thiere are times when it gets too slow.
it seems to me that they are at their offices only from 8:00 to 17:00, from Mondays to Fridays, so if you loose conection on saturdays, you must wait until Monday for them to fix the problem.
It costs 50$ monthly, and the antenna costs arround 300$ (you only pay once).
What do you think about the price - speed relation?. I dont know how much internet costs in other countries, but it seems to me that they have better services and lower prices.
(sorry for my poor English)
