Title: Fears for the Dub
Post by: Sailor Yue-chan on February 11 2007, 07:11 am
OK, i just got Pretear DVD set, and decided to see how the dub was. Its horribl, absolutly no voicematching. (hell Himeno sounds like a vally girl -_-) so it brought up my fears of thie dub. how bad will the voice matching be. you can bet all names will be bastardized into american. (remember how wierd sakura was in the CCS dub?) the japanese pronuncietion of the names are poetic. bastardization is horrible. (its bad enough they ALWAYS have to drop the second vowel {u} so Yuuko will turn out to be Yuko, which if looked at with out actually HEARING her name will cause people to pronouce it "Yuck-o" DX. and if i even HEAR them pronouce Fai's name like "Faye" just becaouse the anime spells it as Fay, ill stop right there. i will NOT put up with that AT ALL!

what are some of YOUR worst fears?

Well it would be good if Fai even turned to Faye, than changing his neame completly >.<
The worst would be Kurogane's voice... I really know how horrible dub can be done in my country (with english dub I only know some older animes - Dragon Ball or Digimon) and I konw that it's hard to find a voice for a character like Kurogane...
And Yuuko would have a voice of an old hag or Fai voice of a girl... *shudder*

true. voice matching is the #one thing to get. in Pretear, out of all hte main characters (the 7 nights, and Himeno's family) only Mayune and himeno's father have good matches. everyone else, is poorly done, tho Sasame is close, but not quite.

I don't think Funimation is going to screw TRC up, with how popular it is and all. Old Funi is getting better with voice overs, Fullmetal Alchemest, Trinity Blood and Eureka 7.

So don't judge it till you hear it. Besides there are a few American dubbed versons over the Japanese ones. Wolf's Rain OVA's is a good example.

My fear is, if any, who the heck is Fai's VA going to be? And Funi is also true to names. So Sakura's name will be pronouced Saa-kur-a, and Fai's will be F-eye.(mind the pun)

Well, Four confermed voices has shown up at ANN

Monica Rial will most likely play as Mokona, as she has play small animals in the past.

Mike McFarland might be Fay,

Colleen CLINKENBEARD Might be Yuuko

Caitlin GLASS might be Sakura, because I know she can sing, or she could be the girl who sings at the Clover Bar

I could be wrong at who's who and what not

monica rial will play sakura
caitlin glass i heard would be mokona
and vic mignogna will play fai's voice actor

...and vic mignogna will play fai's voice actor

You mean the guy who VA-ed Edward? I think that his VA-ing is great, he made Ed sound prety good [I didn't like the seyui, Ed sounded too young]! I'm one of his voice groupies XD [lol].

And after all I think after Furuba the VA-ers got better, but Momiji was played by a bit too girly in Funi version, wasn't he? Ayaka Saito-sama FOREVER [she was pretty good in Host Club too]
Title: Re: Fears for the Dub
Post by: Crystal_Wings on February 28 2007, 05:22 pm
I just heard Monica Rial is going to be Sakura... Why? If I could have requested one voice actress not to play Sakura it would have been her.  I'm sure Vic Mignogna will do fine as Fay. But I have never heard any of Jason Liebrecht's roles.... and he's Syaoran! So I hope he's good. Chris Sabat I actually heard and I think he might do well. It's not like I have any control over this situation.... why Monica Rial?! WHY?!

I really don't agree on that, Edward's japanese seiyuu(Romi Paku) is great! The japanese seiyuus are always better at voiceacting I think, I didn't like Vic's voiceacting, he's ok but if you compare him to Romi Paku(the japanese seiyuu) I absolutely think that Romi Paku is ten times better than him or more!  :okay:

I wonder how Fai will sound with Vic voiceacting him...

Maybe Vic will change his voice... I haven't heard him as anything other than Edward though.... I have heard his real voice and I think if it was just a little lighter... it might work.

Oh yeah, I have heard him as Dark.... Dark is really... wow... yeah, I really like him. <3
I don't know if that will work for fai though. Hmmmmm.... I wish I could hear a voice demo from him.

Saa-kur-a.... *shudders at the pronounciation*. I seriously pray that they won't pronounce it that way...  I love the word/name(and the flower itself XD)  Sakura and pronouncing it that way would make me want to pull my hair.

Just to put it simple, she did the original dubs for Cardcaptors, the english release. I barely found out and I'm screaming my head off.

wait a second. Who did the original English cardcaptor release? Monica Rial? Who was she in that? Not Sakura.... There's no way that was her. She wasn't Meilin either, so who was she?
Title: Re: Fears for the Dub

the only other females that i can think of is sakura's teacher (dunno her real name, and forgot her dub name), and Tomoyo

Monica did Sakura. Her girly sqeaky voice is hate for me. In TRC Sakura's voice was soft but they make it sqeaky, I hope this doesn't happen.
Title: Re: Fears for the Dub

I always get scared about dubs.
I get annoyed because I just dislike seeing the characters I like turn American. (Then again when they have English accents they sound so... weird..which they shouldn't because I am english... but from experience from other dubs, english people seem to give no emotion into their voice overs O___O)

anyway... ^^;

I fear most of all that it just won't feel like Tsubasa. I mean, the anime doesn't feel like Tsubasa enough anyway, take away Yui and Miyu and its just... blah

I guess really I shouldn't be so negative

Here is a a newer role in Monica's careers. She does the main girl and she doesn't sound that bad. But I'm still hating on her. It's called "Kurau Phantom Memory"

Aww I think Jason will do a pretty good job as Syaoran... I think. XD

Some of his more important roles are Alphons Heiderich in the Fullmetal movie, Train in Blackcat, and Kouhei in Moonphase.

Carly McKillip as Sakura Avalon

Whoever this Monica is, she certainly didnt do dub CCS Sakura.

i heard Monica Rail's voice when she either accepted or presented an award on the Anime Awards, and its a really anoying voice. think of that anoying woman on Will and grace, only slightly less anoyuing than that. Monica's voice is nasaly sorta

monica voices kurau in "kurau: phantom memory" and possibly hikaru in "Figure 17."

i do NOT like her voice that much. i cannot imagine tht voice comming from sakura, let alone singing "you are my love"

(note: i have yet to see the trailer)

I can also confirm that Carly McKillip did the voice of Sakura Avalon in Crapcaptors. Nothing wrong with her voicing abilities but it didn't fit our heroic Mistress of the Clow.

alot of my fears were justified.

-no one can say kurogane's name save for Yuuko
-the solution for the lack of honorifics and syaoran/syaorankun is.... ugh
-Sakura's VA is a terrible choice. i do NOT want to hear Monica Rial sing "You are my Love" >_< (no offence directed towards the actress; its just not a sutable choice)
-the kuro-nicks suck (kugy-poo..... shudders)
-and just like in cardcaptors... they dont know the proper pronunciation of "Clow" -_- betcha Yuuko's VA could say it tho.... she could say "Kurogane" the right way.

And after getting the second DVD and watching it, it's not getting any better. The lord's son in the Chun Hyang story arc sounds like a dead ringer for Kuwabara from the English YuYu Hakusho dub.

Only thing I do like in the DVD so far is the sound editing in the Dolby Surround...very well done but be forewarned...hearing Fai go 'Woo!' will make you rip your ears out :(
Title: Re: Fears for the Dub

ok, proof that monica rial is not a bad VA is how she voices this girl in AIR (tv) that voice, softish and cute. not nasaly anoying. whn i saw the cast credits my first reactoins was 'what, really?' why couldnt she act thatway for sakura? the personalities of sakura nad this girl are similar too! cute, curious, somewhat clumsy, -sigh- (Vic Mignona is in it too, but the voice he uses is not Fai material, but the matching is definatly good for the character!)

trc dub sounds like its gettingworse and worse =_= they took away hyuu~! and mekyo, no one can ACT except maybe Chris sabat (but then those whove watched DB-whatever complain that he sounds too much like pikilo(sp)  -_- )

and from this point, there doesnt seem to be any hope for the holic dub. mokona will be just as anoying if they use the same VA, and i expect himiwari's voice will be horird, as will zashiki warashi. and im betting that theyll get a VA that gives doumeki emotion. he's not suposed to have "emotion", but no one will tell the VA that >_>

To me, it sounds like the English voice actors are not putting any emotions in their voices. It's as though they're reading off a script and that's it.

Finished watching the 4th DVD set from Funimation. As with many dubs, it does seem to get better but still, as a whole it's still bad. At least the translations are consistant however the 'CLOW' thing still bugs me, as does the annoying English pet names for Kurogane. Also in the 16th episode, on the English track, the Japanese song version of 'Time Goes By' is only an instrumental. You have to switch to the Japanese version to hear the vocals to it. Lame.

Yeah, I plan on buying. It makes for a nice drinking game.
Dub nolonger sound that bad to me anymore, (But Sakura's VA, that one I will dump on) just got use to it. And I could always go for the Japanese track if I wanted.
Also, don't blame Funi for the Anime, Bee Train is the main killer in that.

Well, after 11 DVDs released from Funimation and with only one more remaining, I can come to the undenying conclusion...THE ENGLISH DUB SUCKS!!! BIG TIME!!! All of the Japanese songs are now only wordless tunes on the dub version and on the 10th DVD, they couldn't even pronounce KERO correctly, let alone Keroberus. Also they gave him the surfer-dude type voice from the Crapcaptors series for the English dub.

At least you can watch the horror in its original Japanese but we all know by now the final eps of TRC ended horribly so the less said, the better ;)

Depends on whether you're into TRC. The series is 'watered down' from the manga since it was aimed toward a younger audience. The first season is passable and Funimation has a first season DVD set now available for around $50-$60 (compared to $20-$25 per DVD for the 6 that make up the first season). The second season had its moments but toward the end became totally unwatchable as they strayed VERY FAR AWAY from the manga storyline.

It's all up to you but all I'll say...stick with the Japanese audio and sub-titles. Like Homer Simpson once said: "English side ruined!" :D
