Chapter 1: You're Serious, Aren't You?
(by Lady Ultima, added on 2005-10-10 10:46:09 AEST) [Discussion Topic]

Just some cute KuroxFai-ness. Enjoy it. This is my first Tsubasa fic, and KuroxFai is my current favorite pairing. I have their wedding all planned out. J

You’re Serious, Aren’t You?

It had all started… well, where had it started? Good question. Cliché, but good. Well, when Fai had first seen Kurogane at Yuuko-san’s place, Fai had immediately noticed that the man was hardly unattractive.

He’d quickly gone on to notice that, not only was he not bad-looking, he was, in fact, very attractive. Fai had quickly developed a mild (well, mild for him) infatuation.

The infatuation hadn’t lasted very long at all- in fact, no more than a day or two. It had morphed into a full-blown obsession. Or love. Whichever word one preferred.

Fai had never been hung up on such irrelevant things as gender; the wizard had never really cared about ‘protecting his identity as a male.’ He was more androgynous than anything else; there were far more important things in the world to think about than his biology and what everybody said that his biology meant he had to be and do. If, being a man, he was different than a woman, then he was different and nothing could change it. Why get hung up on what was ‘appropriate’ for either sex? That was the general attitude in Celes, but Fai was aware that some- well, many- worlds considered same-sex pairings wrong because they were ‘inappropriate.’ Fai’s worry that Kuro-chan’s world was one of these worlds had been part of the reason Fai hadn’t jumped Kuro-rin and proclaimed his undying love while tearing off Kuro-tan’s clothes from the beginning. There were other reasons, but they got progressively worse. Among them was that, after years of making damn sure he did nothing to arouse Ashura’s jealousy, old habits died hard. He had, in fact, been surprised to find himself so able and willing to tease and flirt with Kurogane so soon after leaving his former lover. Of course, Kuro-chi didn’t see it for the flirting it was; he just saw the bothersome-ness (was that a word?) of it.

Either way, Fai had been and currently was deeply in love with his Big Doggy. And so, having, for some unknown reason, woken at approximately three in the morning on one of the many nights in which the two of them had a room had a room all to themselves (but, unfortunately, separate beds), the magician found himself staring intently at his sleeping companion. This world was cold- cold, even to Fai. He’d dearly like to snuggle next to Kurogane, and Kurogane seemed so deeply asleep that he wouldn’t wake if Fai did cuddle a bit. Fai’s mouth curved into a grin. Or a lot. Quite a lot.

Yes, Fai-chan would get to have his wicked way with Kuro-pi. He would get to cuddle the night away. And he would get to see his Kuro’s face in the morning when they woke up and Kuro-Kuro found the blond magician wrapped around him.

Having decided, Fai climbed out of his bed and slowly lowered himself into Kurogane’s bed. The shared warmth soon put him to sleep.

Even before Kurogane opened his eyes several hours later, he realized that the blankets were a lot heavier this morning than they’d been last night. And they felt a lot more- solid was the best word he could come up with. They didn’t feel like blankets. Hell, they didn’t feel like cloth. They felt like… skin.

The ninja’s eyes shot open. It took him a moment to come to terms with the sight that greeted him.

The damned wizard was on top of him. Under the blankets. On his bed. On top of him. Unfortunately clothed. Whoa there- unfortunately clothed? Where the –hell- did that thought come from? Anywho. The Celesean was wrapped around him. When the hell did this happen?

It was then that Kurogane noticed the look on Fai’s face. It was a huge, goofy grin just like he always wore. Except not exactly like the other smiles. This one… was a real smile. It was genuine. And content. Kurogane had never seen this look on Fai’s face before. It was very difficult to be angry with the mage with that look on his face, for some inexplicable reason.

Suddenly, Fai gave a small groan and began to blink. After a few moments, having fully woken up, he looked into Kurogane’s eyes and chirped, with that insufferable grin on his face, “Good morning, Kuro-pippi! Did you sleep well? I did.”

“Why the hell are you in my bed?”

Fai began to give his puppy-dog eyes. “I was lonely, Kuro-ran, and I wanted to be held in the arms of the tall, dark, and handsome ninja that I’m so desperately in love with.” He was about to babble on when Kurogane silenced him with one sentence.

“You’re serious, aren’t you?”

Fai blanched a bit, caught off guard by being taken seriously. He couldn’t deny it, when faced with the question like that. He slowly nodded his head as the smile changed to an almost pleading look of sincerity. “Completely serious.”

Kurogane released a sound somewhere between a snort and a sigh. Fai couldn’t read his expression.

“You don’t mind, do you?” Please, please, don’t mind. Please don’t take this- these feelings for you- away from me. I’ve lost almost everything else precious, don’t take this too.
Kurogane shot him an exasperated look. “Mind? Why the hell would I mind? Somebody being in love with you is generally considered a compliment, isn’t it?”

A compliment? Fai’s mind reeled for a moment. Yes, he supposed it would be considered a compliment at that. He’d never though of it in quite that light.

“And besides, it does explain a lot about why you act like you do around me. Not to mention that you’re finally being honest with me.”

Fai looked down at Kurogane’s chest, avoiding his eyes. “I… was… worried you’d be disgusted.”

“Disgusted? Oh, because we’re both men, is that it?” Fai nodded. Kurogane shook his head. “Nah. Happens all the time in my Japan, with guys and girls. Nobody minds, except for narrow-minded idiots.”

“In some worlds it’s considered wrong.”

“Well, like I said, not where I come from.”

Fai plastered another fake smile on his face and began to climb off of Kurogane. “Well, I’ll go make breakfast then.”

“You idiot, don’t leave. You just declare your love and then go off to make pancakes?”

Fai shot him an almost-annoyed look. “I’m not going to force you into anything.”

“Dear Gods, you’re frustrating. Half the time you act like a kid, the other half like a passive-aggressive suicidal puppet. I just don’t effing get you,” Kurogane growled.

The mage flinched at the all-too accurate portrait of himself. Without really thinking about what he was saying he shot back, “No, you do get me. That’s the problem. You understand me better than anybody else here.” After an intense moment, Fai lowered himself back onto Kurogane, laying his face against his Kuro-tan’s chest. “After all, you always know when my smiles are fake, don’t you?”

“Yeah, I guess I do,” the ninja conceded. After a minute he hesitatingly wrapped his arms around Fai’s waist. Fai blinked at the unexpected action. Kurogane quietly asked, “Do you mind me asking… why?”

Fai gazed inquiringly at Kurogane. “Why I love you? That’s easy.” He smiled and began to count the reasons off on his fingers. “Because you’re cute and sexy, and you’re strong, determined, good with a sword, brave, passionate, straightforward, and a million other things I’m not. Why wouldn’t I fall in love with you?”

Kurogane rolled his eyes, but clearly took Fai at the wizard’s word. He sighed, continuing the conversation. “Look, I’ve never had someone confess they love me before, so I really don’t know how this is supposed to go, but I’ll try. You’re being honest for once, so you at least deserve that from me. And I’ll tell you right here and now that… well, I don’t know exactly how I feel about you. You… don’t get on my nerves as much as you used to. You’re hardly helpless or useless, so you’re not a burden. I certainly don’t hate you. Beyond that, I really don’t know. I’ve never been in love with anyone. And… well, the only person I’ve ever actually cared for in any sort of way was Tomoyo, and half the time I hated her.”

“That’s alright, Kuro-chan.”

Kurogane rolled his eyes again at the nicknames. Even still, he brought his hand up to the wizard’s hair and began to run his fingers through it.

Fai smiled softly. “You know, I could get used to this,” came his muffled comment.

“Yeah, I guess I could, too,” admitted Kurogane.
